Hi, on my I7 13700k rtx 4090 pc in order to get anything like decent clarity (better than my HP g2) I am having to set the resolution to 5200 using open xr toolkit. Several folk claim they are get amazing clarity with resolution setting of 3500 - 3800 but for me that results in poorer clarity than my Hp. Any thoughts on might be happening?
I for one was not satisfied with the lower settings and run the headset at “native” resolution. I have even gone higher with even better results but prefer a set and forget scenario; native resolution gives me the best balance of image quality and fps. stekusteku prefers supersampling and adjusts DLSS settings in sim for more demanding scenarios.
Make sure you are running PimaxXR OpenXR runtime, not the SteamVR. SteamVR is less efficient and also may carry to Crystal the resolution limit which was previously set for Reverb G2. Make sure you actually see a difference when changing resolution in OpenXR toolkit from let’s say 3800 x xxx, to 4700 x xxxx. If you can’t see a difference you may be capped by some setting or you may need glasses as the focusing distance of Crystal is closer vs. G2.
The G2 is actually quite sharp in it’s small sweet spot, the main advantage of Crystal is much bigger sweet spot, bigger FoV, better colors, blacks and brightness.
Cheers, yes am running pimax vr and can see an improvement as resolution on open XR toolkit is increased. Am beginning to think there may be an issue with my vari focal glasses.
That could well be your problem. Since having cataract surgery, although I now have 20/20 distance vision, I do use varifocal reading glasses, with the top bit having no correction at all for distance. Without glasses, the Crystal was just not sharp enough and my reading glasses really didn’t help as they were the wrong dioptre. So I had my eyes tested again, as it had been 2 years since my last test. Then I got tested at the 1 metre VR focus point of the Crystal and had a pair of glasses made for that focus distance (the correction needed was just +0.75 dioptre). That fixed everything and the Crystal is now perfectly sharp, a joy to use in fact.
That’s very interesting. Does anyone know what the focus distance for the Reverb G2 is? Also where did you find the info re focus distance for the crystal?
Hi,
Before I got my Pimax Crystal I used to have to adjust my IPD on my Pimax 8kx and on my Valve Index to the absolute minimum to obtain a somewhat decent picture, although my IPD was measured twice at different opticians at 70 mm.
When my Crystal arrived I still could not get a satisfying resolution.
Then I tried to wear my glasses for driving while using the Crystal and I was suddenly in a new world of clarity. And now the measured IPD worked as well!
So I immediately ordered corrective lenses for my Crystal from VR Rock and have been happy ever since.
There was at least one thread on the Reddit channel, r/Pimax some months ago, where this was discussed. Some other users also found the focus distance to be much closer than other headsets and a +0.75 dioptre adjustment for lens inserts or glasses fixed it for those who were unable to focus that close without reading glasses. It was mentioned there that Pimax had confirmed that 1 metre focus point.
From memory I think the G2 has a focus distance of 1.5 metres, though I could be mistaken.
So I sorted out some glasses that gave me good focus at 1m distance and yes much clearer now on the Pinax Crystal. Thanks very much for all your help.
Good to hear! Glad to help out.
