Pimax Crystal = very high GPU latency at 0.90 resolution

So I’m playing around with my Pimax Crystal (the OG) settings, trying to keep the resolution in FS2020 the same as with DCS.
I can run DCS at 0.90 resolution with FPS limited on 50 without a problem … FS2020 not so much.
(Yes I know, totally different engine and DCS has way better multicore support)

The thing that has me bothering in FS2020 is the GPU latency, which is very very very high : between 25 and 30 m/s
While CPU latency is only 10 to 15 m/s , so I’m GPU heavy (again, high resolution, lots and lots of addons)
Yet when I’m lowering the resolution of the Crystal, I do see a bit of FPS increase but latency stays the same.

I’ve already reinstalled the NVida driver (latest version), updated all the other drivers and using the latest Pimax Play : v1.32.02 (1.33 something)
Clean all of the Nvidia cache etcetc

Currently I’m going on the assumption that SOMETHING in FS2020 is bogged.
(FS2020 didn’t keep any shadercache itself right ?)

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on here ?

My setup :
AMD 7950X3D, 64GB DDR5 6000Mhz RAM, Inno3D RTX 4090 Frostbite Pro … and a Pimax Crystal

If you are on 90Hz and you would like to limit your FPS to half the frequency you should have limiter (in PimaxXR Companion) at 45 not 50.

I’m not even getting 45 FPS in MSFS because of the high GPU latency, it’s between 28 en 38 tops.
Only in DCS I’m getting past 50 FPS

Nice rig! 2020 is very heavy on the “frame command creation side”, taking a long time to build frames that the GPU seems very able to handle. However, I had the same issues with my 3080Ti. There doesn’t seem to be a formula right now, but cross your fingers for 2024.

Consider:

  • DLSS Quality
  • clouds High (not Ultra)
  • experimenting with TLOD value

With similar H/W I’m getting 35-48 FPS.

40fps is about what I get, and if I want to better performance I have to give up the visuals to the point where it isn’t worth it.

Consider trying this, I don’t know why but it gave me some VR perf back in the Crystal. Assumes you’re running DX12 with frame gen enabled for 2d mode. Turn off FG and save, then enter VR mode.

Restored some decent amount of perf here…

Use dynamic foveated rendering via the openxr toolkit. Gives me a boost of almost 20% in fps.

Already got dynamic FOV rendering turn on in the latest Pimax Play (the one with has PimaxXR/OpenXr intigrated)

I have to look were this one is located, I thought frame gen was only available when your using DLSS (I’m using TAA)

What is your render scaling 1-200?

Same thing I found :
Either turn graphic settings way down, so you lose the reason your running at a higher resolution or accept that your getting a lower FPS with a very high GPU latency
I did notice that the Pimax Crystal stills seems to be able to give a smooth view even at 33 to 35 FPS, as long as the latency is below 21 m/s (good luck getting it below 25 m/s, even at sea)

I still think my FS2020 installation is messed up with al the updates from the last 6 months.
The plan is to do a full reinstall, yet I’m still waiting to buy a new 2TB SSD.
My plan is to put the new FS2024 on the current 2TB PCI-E SSD and move FS2020 to a ‘normal’ SSD.

100 for both TLOD and OLOD.

Going higher doesn’t seem to improve graphics that much, and will only make the RTX 4090 cry more.

I asked about Render Scaling. :yum:

TLOD and OLOD are primarily CPU intensive.

Too high render scaling and you could grind a 4090 to a halt. Try 100. Adjust from there. You might need to go below 100. You might be able to go above.

But I guarantee it is the key to lowering a fast GPU’s latency.

Ah, yes rendering scale is 100.
Already tried turning it down in FS2020 : for some reason graphics went down the drain even when lowering to 95, at 90 you were looking at big fuzzy world (couldn’t even read the dails in the aircraft and helicopters)
(This was weird by the way, the degradation of graphics happening so fast)

So only way is to lower the resolution on the Crystal, which is precisly what I’m trying to prevent.

I am only worried about your latency at this point.

This isn’t DCS. It is about balancing your GPU and CPU.

Your graphics can get good again once we get you some GPU overhead.

This sim can takes months to learn how to best configure. I am just looking at the broad strokes right now.

It will all come together in the end.

And yes, VR is just going to be more fuzzy than 2D. It is the nature of the beast.

Drop it to 75% and let me know how the latency is.

Just did some tests :
Left the Pimax Crystal at 0.90 resolution and change FS2020 rendering scale to 75%.
When you start the flight FPS is high (48/50ish) and GPU m/s is around 17.
Yet after a couple of minutes GPU latency it goes back to 25 to 28 m/s and FPS drops to around 35, same as with rendering scale at 100%

So tried it again, after cleaning DX cache and GL cache, same airport, same plane same weather, but now with rendering scale at 85% (I’m just trying something right now)
Again, when the flight starts FPS is around 50ish with a GPU latency between 17 and 20 m/s… and again after a couple of minutes GPU latency takes a dive to between 25 and 28 m/s.
Tried lowering TLOD and OLOD to see if this would give a response : nope, still between 25 and 28 m/s.

You’re right, so you’ll to turn the option off before you enter VR mode

“Turn off FG and save, then enter VR mode.”

I’m using TAA, not DLSS so I don’t have the frame generation option

Maybe you don’t have hags enabled then to give you the option IN 2D. Maybe I’ve not conveyed my point clearly, the point is to turn off FG in 2d mode then switch to VR. This alone gave me a perf boost in VR. I’m not saying FG option exists in the VR options and I have no idea why it helped VR performance…
