Planning to re-install MSFS2020 and need some advice

Hey guys!

In the past when I’ve had MSFS2020 installed, I’ve had constant issues whenever an update has been released. Where I’ve never received those updates.

Now with VR support released, I’m planning to give it another go. Currently, I don’t have MSFS2020 installed on my PC. Going into MS Store, I’m a bit confused where I see what is seen below and need your advice. Should I install Microsoft Flight Simulator by hitting the ‘Install’ button or should I rather hit the ‘Manage’ button next to Microsoft Flight Simulator: Premium Deluxe (which is the version I actually bought) followed by ‘Install’ on the next screen.

And what about that Digital Ownership item, should I install that first of all to make sure I have the license in place?

I really want to try making sure I do this the correct way this time to hopefully avoid future issues when new updates are released down the road.

Forgot to add the screenshot, here it is

OK, so my plan was to make MSFS2020 download and install before I go to bed. I went ahead by clicking the ‘Manage’ button next to Microsoft Flight Simulator: Premium Deluxe and then ‘Install’.

The installation seemed to finish successfully and I also noticed how Digital Ownership was installed automatically during the installation process of MSFS.

After this, I picked the Launch option and first, nothing happened for a couple of seconds. Then the screen went black with a frame of sorts. Some more seconds passed and I then had a small circle spinning in the lower, right hand corner of the screen. Watched that spinning for a couple of seconds and the moment after, I was back on my desktop with no error message no nothing.

I’m honestly getting so tired of this bu##sh#t now!!!

Will try to get in touch with a real person over at MS tomorrow rather than some stupid chat bot and demand a refund so I can buy the title for the some money over at Steam instead. I’ve been within the IT business for decades, both professionally and personally and I can’t recall I ever had this much trouble installing/updating/ running an application before! Not really sure if I should laugh or cry…

I also loved when I was in contact with MS about very similar kind of issues when I just bought it earlier this summer when it was released and MS eventually thought the best “solution” would be for me to reinstall Windows on my PC. I told them I have a very complex setup that would take weeks to restore and that I wouldn’t even consider doing such a thing for a single application misbehaving. And certainly not when everything else on my PC is working 100% fine. I only have this issue with this single application.

Oh well…let’s see what happens tomorrow. Now I need to get some sleep. Too bad I wasn’t able to download and install this title as planned. Was very much looking forward to try out VR tomorrow.

Brother, as like as two peas, I have the same problem with you. I upgraded the windows system version, removed and re installed the game, checked the video card driver update, restart the computer and many other attempts. But it’s still the same problem as you. I also bought the game in the windows store. I don’t have any mod installed. I can play the game normally before the update the day before yesterday. It’s annoying.

I see this is your first post in here, welcome buddy!

Really annoying and the game wasn’t exactly cheap. So I do want to be able using it without these kind of constant issues.

Will be most interesting to see how MS will choose to handle the situation tomorrow when I call them. Because now I want a proper and immediate solution or my money back. Simple as that.

Thank you for your reply, my friend. Because my English is not good enough, I can only ask for help in the local forum of my country. If you find the right solution, please help me. Similarly, if I find a solution, I will tell you the first time. I hope we can solve this ■■■■ problem as soon as possible. Have a happy day.

Try loading the xbox app for pc
Then logon with your Microsoft account within the app. Go to your games library within the xbox app for pc and it should show your fs2020 there. You can then choose install from it. I have done this and it works no problem every time.

Unfortunately, I just tried to start the game from Xbox app with my own account, but the above problems still haven’t been solved. Anyway, thank you very much for your help.

Hi guys, frustrating thing I believe you. See if you have any crashdump log inside your Windows Sys Events viewer after attempting to launch the sim. There could be some clues in it.

Must be something related to ucrtbase.dll library. Going to search the forums for anyone else having the same issue.

You should know that before you pull the trigger and get the Steam version, which I’m currently running, I’am having the same issue after this last update. So I’m pretty sure that this issue isnt exclusive to the MS store.I was able to use the sim just fine until this update. When I saw the update prompt I cringed and got a sinking feeling inside my gut. Every single update has bought major headaches…and I do mean EVERY update. I just find it so ridiculous that this is occurring this far into the sims life. I want to love it all the time but am finding I only love it when I can play it, and at tis point, I have spent more time burying my head in forums and research to make the sim work right, and finally when I get it tuned it just right…BLAMMMMHHH!!! Its like Asobo and MS have a vendetta against me cuz i have said a few sour words about them…and well deserved they were, but at the same time I gave credit where credit was due…but man o man Im getting sick of tired of this stupid $#!T happening all the time. I would expect for the first few weeks of an early release…but this is just brain jarring. I know I keep beating this drum…but ■■■■ I just want to able to confidently sit down and use the sim that I paid my hard earned $$ and not have a whole song and a dance ordeal EVERY freakin time!!!

Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that myself - thanks buddy! I guess the reason was how I never received any error message, I was just thrown back to the desktop.

Sure enough I found what seems to be the same error message already posted above. Even when many of the characters look weird on my screen. Below is the error message I found and I’ll try to find some more info about it later on today

I did a quick search right now and found a bunch of older posts about this dll file causing CTDs in various situations. However, narrowing the search down to the exception code we see here and posts made recently, there were surprisingly few results.

Really sad how these kind of issues seem to go on and on when it comes to MSFS. As mentioned, I’ve had issues already since start.

Oh well, maybe one day I’ll be able to use the product I payed for the way I was hoping when I first got it.

@Damgreene I feel and share your pain. Thanks for the HU on Steam not being the solution. At least not for this specific issue.

Will certainly let you and everyone else in here know if I find a solution :+1:

Have a VisualStudio installation? Some say it may give problems sometimes.

From Hong Kong here, I even bought a new pc for the game about, when was it? 2 months ago? Anyway Amd R7, 64gb ram, Rtx 2080. It runs fine, but whenever there was an update the game got screw up. Won’t even start . CTD was rare though. When I seek solution here or elsewhere, fingures are always pointing at me, maybe too much stuffs in Community folder, too many usb instruements, and other possible causes. It makes me feel that it is all the user’s fault, we make it unplayable, etc. Tbh, I believe many of us are using a gaming pc with very reasonable games, software of devises plug on/installed ONLY. Telling us not to put this and that in the pc is xxx unreasonable. BUT, all in all, I and we still listen to whoever advises in the forum to tell us to try this and that to the state that we nearly need to re format the whole pc just to run the game. Please, do not think we are the wrong doers. I love the game, I appreciate and thanks the hard work of the developer. BUT, please, admit the game do not take care of everybody. And at the least admit the game is so sensitive that any change in our pc environment may cause the game to crash. And they have no clue what it is. I started to think pls by updating the game, pls do not over write our own gaming pc environment with the hope to cure the problem then accidentally causing problem of other games on our pc which are running 100% fine.

I have no idea why people are having install and update problems, but because I haven’t had any really, I’ll share how I’ve installed the game (this might have nothing to do with the problem but just sharing for you to test or analyze).

I used Xbox app to install, I chose drive e:

When ingame installer asked cache folder, I put e:cache/

And every time update is due, I check the cache folder is correct.

Like I said, this might have nothing to do with the topic, but since hardly any problem apart from stuck download once, everything has been working great. Best of luck with your install and updates.

Tried what you suggested launching via the Xbox app but same issue I’m sorry to say.

I’ve learned to always select the “install” button, and it’ll prompt me to select which storage drive to save it to. Once the install begins it’ll automatically download your digital ownership license and any other additional components you purchased such as premium content.

No Visual Studio over here. Thanks anyway for the tip!

Talked to MS Support today but I’m sorry to say the guy I talked to didn’t have much help to offer. Other than referring to the FAQs, guides etc already found in here. With tips most of us already went through many times to no avail.

When he realized I already did all this, was on the latest version of everything etc (and I told him I’m not interested in doing a fresh installation of Windows…), he suggested I should enable HyperV to create a VM and then install a 60 days trial of Windows on the VM and then install MSFS on the VM.

At this point, I told him I’m already past how much hassle I’m willing to go through to troubleshoot their software not working. Told him I’ll give it another go in maybe half a year and hope for more luck at that point.

Too bad since I was kind of looking forward to play around with the new implementation of VR during the Christmas holidays.

Oh well, at least I have that other flight simulator starting with an X
