Please Fix Photogrammetry and/or LOD

I absolutely hate how it looks and really it is a turn off for me. I stopped flying in the US because of it. On top of it I can’t use Live weather because of those thunderstorms. So basiclly what am saying is that all the things that matter the most for me in the sim are broken. Judging from listening Asobo on twitch, they dont really know what to do with some of those issues that are pointed by the community by giving us those shallow answers. CRAZY!

See @gordongreig (my LOD arguing buddy) – it IS a US issue. Well, at least someone else agrees with me. I honestly think the US has the worst issues w/ photogrammetry and LOD issues.

I 100% agree with you @moxiejeff I would have to be extra dumb not seeing those things.

I have to say, I think it must only be an issue for some people. I DO NOT have any issues with it. Everything looks fine to me. I don’t see the cone shaped buildings others have posted screenshots of, etc. My video card is a RTX 2080 Super with latest drivers.

For all who do have the issue, please note that I am not in any way suggesting that you don’t have a problem. I’ve seen the screenshots some folks have posted and I know you aren’t lying about it. When I get a chance I’ll post a screenshot to show that I don’t have the issue. I think knowing that it doesn’t affect everyone is a meaningful clue toward finding the root cause.

@JWales2895 Could you do me a favor and go to JFK airport like those pictures couple a posts above and take a screenshots and post them here how it looks on your end? Similar pictures if you can?
It should look good if you say so.

Thanks all.

Also for what it’s worth, use drone camera AND then once you’re in a jet or airliner and going 220-240knots take a pic of downtown (do not be over it, be around 3 miles away or even from the airport so we can compare).

Well, I stand corrected. I just went to replicate the JFK screenshots and I won’t even bother posting because they look terrible. Even worse than the screenshots above. This is the first I’ve tried with Update 5, so maybe it has made things worse. I swear it hasn’t looked like this to me before. It’s especially bad when I zoom in.

TBH, I fly mostly GA at moderate to low altitudes, so maybe I just haven’t noticed since I have been focused on the immediate surroundings. Either way, sorry for injecting confusion into this conversation. Just upvoted, FWIW.

Glad I’m getting more people sharing same experience.

Some in another thread suggested it’s more about latency/bandwidth/internet vs LOD and maybe they’re right, I don’t know.

New examples from tonight at JFK – cityline looks awful until I fly on top of it practically.

Finally renders once I’m basically right next to it:

This is my biggest problem. Game looks nowhere near how it did on launch. Instead of optimizing or creating lower settings for the people having performance issues, they just nuked it for everyone including all the people that weren’t having problems. The LOD draw distance is really terrible now, the water texture has been downgraded, reflections have been completely changed etc.

I hope this hasn’t been done deliberately to bring it more in line with what the Xbox version will be. Total false advertising. The amount of money people have spent upgrading or buying computers solely for this game & how amazing it looked to then have this now. Not right. What’s wrong with giving those able to run the game fine, the option to.

These are some observations from the other day. Everything set on ultra/highest setting. 200mb stable connection.

The ‘good detail’ LOD perimeter is far too small (& nowhere near how it was at launch). An option needs to at least increase it 6-8x (was more like 15-20x further at launch). The ‘blurry, low-res & flat’ in the distance needs to be the ‘bad detail’ LOD perimeter in the least. Then beyond all that much further away can be the ‘blurry, low-res & flat’ area.

The higher you go, the worse it get’s now. Starting out how it is even at low altitude now, it’s incredibly bad. The LOD distance was great from any height before. I remember at launch flying above LA & NYC from 500ft-15,000ft being able to see 45-55 miles away (yes, I measured it) in perfect detail, just like the pre-launch footage & trailers. Then anything beyond that was still in pretty good detail. Now it’s no more then a couple miles & a huge drop-off.

I’m genuinely starting to lose interest in starting up FS2020 with things like this happening, avionics & general bugs, updates making things worse, lack of decent fsx style missions etc.

Asobo need to do something about this.

I made a post on Reddit on the 10th of September highlighting that they are starting to downgrade the sim people laughed at my post, 50days later and it’s one of the most talked about problems,
i really think it’s because they are bringing vr into the sim most people struggled to run the sim on a normal monitor let alone trying to run vr

Thanks @JWales2895 for the honest answer.

After the support closed my first ticket instantly after suggesting that I should just ask in the forums, I opened a second ticket. Now they are suggesting that the newest update might have solved my problem. The screenshot turned out too big, so I had to upload it on reddit. I’m pretty sure it’s gotten even worse, and I’m not exeggerating when I say that this is the ugliest city I have ever seen in a video game. I’m a gamer since 2002 and have seen a lot, but this. Wow. And as I said, this is on a system that hits ALL “ideal” system requirements. And they still won’t admit that the problem is on their side.

I flew around Tokyo yesterday and I didn’t notice any melted buildings, but similarly to your pictures all the small houses were very low detail/just a flat mushy area only a few miles away.

In contrast, the larger buildings were still rendered and then stood out weirdly (might be because LOD depends on object size). This should happen only much further out in the distance where you would only see the larger buildings anyway.

I can’t say for sure that it hasn’t been like that from launch though. It’s easy to remember the good things especially when playing a new game and not noticing the flaws until later. However, with the number of people reporting there has been a change I’m more and more convinced of a bug.

Hence the frustration from so many because Asobo clearly has no idea what they’re doing in this regard.

photo scenes have one more problem is textures day and night buildings looks like after fire in the day and like ms95 in the night, las is exclude for sure

The LOD and Photogrammetry are so pathetic in this sim. It’s clear they have no idea how to optimize this. x-Plane just destroys Asobo in this aspect. Edit… yes x-plane doesn’t have Photogrammetry (thank GOD).

It has to be Hiroshima or Nagasaki one of those

Bumpin!!

Can’t even fly anywhere near major cities as it looks terrible. This is the LA area! Black, melted textures that pop in as I fly along.

For the time being I have turned off photogrammetry, flying past New York at 4500ft the outskirts looked so much better without the melted trees etc, the Empire State Building was there and lost of skyscrappers so you still get the busy city feeling, and it did look better with no melties.

My photogrammetry is awful! It looks partially loaded and melted. It also doesn’t load things further away. My friend is playing on a lower end pc than me, he plays in 1080p and I play at 4k. His loads correctly.

my internet is faster at 80 mgps. Only thing I am wondering is either:

  • is an upload internet speed of around 5 mbps too slow?
  • can my gtx 1060 and i5 3470 not render the scenery at 4k fast enough?
