Please help: how to ask ATC for IFR approach and landing on a specific runway?

Hello!

Let’s say I want to land at Las Vegas North airport. I have an IFR flight plan and the airport is set as destination.

I would like to land using ILS on runway 12L. Initial approach fix for it is a waypoint JOKUS. So, the question: when and how should I ask ATC to land on 12L with desired approach? When should I load and activate approach in GNS530? Should I do it before or after communicating with ATC?

One thing to mention: I tried to ask ATC for ILS 12L but ATC responded “Circle to land runway 30L“. Is this a glitch or I am missing something?

They give you clearance to the active runway. If you are approaching from the opposite direction, they will tell you to circle to land. They will never give you clearance to a non-active runway. If you want to land on 12L change wind direction and this runway will become active. Or ignore ATC and land wherever you want, it’s a game.

You said you had an IFR flight plan set, but was there a reason you didn’t originally set ILS 12L as your approach on the WM?
If you’ve set up the approach on the WM, AND have the option for “ATC enforce flight plan” set, You should be able to fly the approach you want.

Just curious??

Yeah, I just wanted to try an alternative way. Sure, I can set ILS approach in my plan. But I want to experiment and expand my knowledge about game’s landing procedures.
