Aggressively using the “Request Cruising Altitude Decrease” option tends to work pretty well for me, but of course that is only available while you are in cruise (or the ATC thinks you are in cruise, at least). Once you’re in the STAR / approach, sometimes you just have to aggressively ignore the ATC.
But again, that’s not specific to the 737.
