You condemned it to “no chance in FS24”. That’s just what that is. Now, I can find common ground with you - I agree that the DC-6 deserves more love. It’s been neglected over the years. I would love to see native engine smoke for example. Where we differ is our responses. Being abrasive will not get the developer’s attention. It gets us arguing rather than making a good case for the improvements we want to see.
Absolutely. And it’s actually counter-productive because the only reasons this plane even exist are 1) the company needed a “learning project” for MSFS as a platform; and 2) the founder/owner of the company has a very big soft spot for vintage radial engine planes.
Being rude and offending the guy who created the product is not a way to incentivize him to continue development.
But it’s also very much an economic situation - I would not doubt it if the DC-6 turned out to be outsold 10:1 by the lowest-selling version of the 737 or 777. Top tier sim developers don’t work cheap (nor should they!) and a company doesn’t survive 27+ years in this industry making poor economic decisions.
I don’t like that you’re right because I want more complex vintage addons, but you’re right. We’re a niche within a niche.
The DC6 was part of my own “learning project” really - it was the first really complex aircraft I flew in the sim and it taught me a lot. Not just about flying -which it did - but about the sheer amount of systems detail and effort that PMDG put into developing their aircraft. It led me to purchasing the B737 and B777 products which are also stand outs. But I still go back to the DC6 which flew really well in MSFS2024 SU3… I will still find a lot of time for it once PMDG have fixed it up for us. I saw an Air Atlantique DC-6 doing a couple of circuits around Jersey Airport many years ago - the noise and the sheer size of it took my breath away…
Does that mean the update will be free, instead of a couple of 15 USD coffees? ![]()
Hello Mathijs, if I buy the DC6 in 2020 will it be a small update fee in 2024 or is it better to wait for the updated 2024 version. Thanks.
Good news on the DC-6 front…
They said the same at su1
It is 2026, not 2016. And we’re on FS2024, not XP10. The graphical standards for simulated aircraft have moved far beyond what the DC-6 offers.
Forget the upgrade for now. Releasing the now 10-year old DC-6 as a $60 product for FS2024 in its current state is a mistake. It will only appeal to those of us who already own and love it, and are willing to overlook that level of texturing and cockpit modeling for the sake of nostalgia.
The truth is, you only have one chance to make a good impression. Imagine a new PC or console player who buys the 2024 version of the DC-6, full price. The first thing they see is the blurry low resolution cockpit textures. They might just quit thinking the plane is broken, and never explore the systems to truly appreciate it. Worse, they might be turned away from PMDG as a brand and not try any of their better-modeled planes.
I just don’t understand why they can’t at least fix some obvious stuff in the cockpit. Seems like a minor amount of work to create some 3D objects. I understand I’m not a developer (but I do have a little 3D modelling knowledge) and it’s probably more compicated than what we think but still.
Even just some retexturing of the cockpit would make a huge difference, some of the textures are decidedly low res for a premium priced product.
I really don’t think you guys understand the amount of work you’re asking for…
I’m sorry you’re disappointed with the product. I and many others are not.
Exactly, most of us don’t know because we are not developers. It would be nice if a developer could go into detail about why it’s nearly impossible to create some 3D objects and release a small update. I think that would make us understand it a little better.
No one suggested it’s “nearly impossible.” Rather, they’re suggesting that the effort required is non-trivial, and the economic return on investment of those developer hours is not likely to be high enough to justify the work required. This was PMDG’s first product for MSFS and intended to investigate the level of effort required at that time to move into the MSFS platform, and how to incorporate WASM into their products.
At this point, the best possible use of those developer hours is on future, much higher-selling products like the 747 lineup, a Boeing 737 MAX, and potentially other unannounced-but-hinted at projects like a 787.
And it uncovered the Xbox WASM issue that no doubt forced them to hold work on everything, whilst MS /Assobe got their backside in gear.
People have released full cockpit texture upgrades for aircraft on fs.to, I’m not sure asking for a texture upgrade is too much to ask. One texture artist could do this in a few weeks or months at most, and it would need minimal QA.
The textures were called out as bad when it was released, now they just look terrible compared to what else is out there.
behold, you will be beaten here soon for saying that
I believe you have grossly misunderstood what people have said here.
People have responded to this part of your original statement:
The reality is it does have a chance in 2024. If MScenery can sell the kind of garbage aircraft that they claim “every switch and control is fully modeled and animated”, then PMDG’s really, really good, albeit outdated, DC-6 has every chance to make it in 2024. I fly the 2020 version in 2024, so it is making it.
I even agreed with you that I’d like to see it updated, but most of us are realistic in our understanding of where PMDG’s income stream lies, and it ain’t in the DC-6. No matter how much vintage aircraft dorks like myself want it so, the DC-6 is not going to outsell the 7x7 series aircraft.
So, amigo, I totally agree with you about the textures and wanting to see them updated/improved and I’m not here to beat you and never was. Disagreeing with how you phrased something isn’t an outright dismissal of your overall sentiment. ![]()
Does it work OK, or do you need to do some workaround for that?
There have been some frustrating WASM issues (orange radio displays and unresponsive controls/switches) that have appeared from time-to-time.
Mostly, yes, I have managed to make both the aircraft and the liveries installed via OC2 work in 2024.
I’ve updated the layout.json file (using MSFSLayoutGenerator.exe) to get the liveries to work, and I’ve found I’ve needed to load into a variant with the PMDG House livery first to fix the WASM crashes.
However, even this hasn’t been completely consistent. I’d reported a few days ago in this thread that I’d loaded into the DC-6A in the evening, but wasn’t able to fly. Everything worked as it should. The very next day I loaded into it to fly and had the WASM errors. Loading into the PMDG House livery still wouldn’t fix that, so I ended up flying the DC-6B that worked.
I’d say 90% of the time it works without issue. When it does work, I don’t note any major issues during flight and normal operation.
So, it’s weird, inconsistent and in need of its someday-it-will-be-here 2024 update.
