PMDG Douglas DC-6

Yes. Only one left is the FBW airbus.

FSUIPC or anything in place ?!

No nothing. It’s a fairly ā€˜virgin’ install

And the eventviewer is unclear as ever… the famous error 5, flightsim.exe… nothing else.

I’ll dive into the liveries as last option. Flying from a ā€˜hot’ start was no problem yesterday.

strange… there are a couple patches incoming for the dc-6 till the end of the week regarding ctd’s, though.

Yep, I read that. Seems they found one, then found another one… that’s how these things go… so I’m hoping it will solve this one too.

I’m also using regular ATC… somehow I have the feeling that messes a bit with the audio of the FLE. Also something to test… not use ATC…

Maybe you already do, but make sure to disable multiplayer globally, in the actual general options screen, not just in the options for the next flight.

I also had frequent CTDs after I disabled MP, even with no other add-ons at all. But initially I only disabled it on the screen for the current flight - once I also set the global option to off, I haven’t had a single CTD (even after re-enabling a gazillion add-ons and tools)

Thanks for the tip, but it was off there already.

Actually I’ve never enabled multiplayer. I’ve now turned off all traffic everywhere, even live. But that’s clearly not the cause. It’s annoying to test this though… takes ages before I’m finally taxiing… I also have the slight impression it’s time related? Like it crashes now a bit further along, only because I’m getting faster in setting it up…

Darn, thought that would help…

One other thing you might try is to also turn off all static ground traffic (set to 0). Someone mentioned it could be related to static DC-6 aircraft spawning around you which then causes a CTD, similar to the MP issue. Naturally that would occur much more often on larger, busy airports.

Not sure if that would make any difference, but may be worth a try.

That’s a good one. I did indeed see a DC-6 just now. But it worked anyway.

Different strategy: I let the FLE complete the first 3 or 4. Only then I call in ATC and taxi.

Not sure if that was the trick, but I’m flying! Now if you know how to get the autopilot to follow the GPS? I’ve set the GPS to GPS and that other one to Localizer…all good tips from the forum… but it’s still flying circles… shouldn’t I activate something?

Wow, beautiful shots! Especially the B&W versions are so captivating!

Shameless self-promotion.

I made a video for a cold & dark tutorial without the AFE.

Disclaimers:

Disclaimer 1: I make no profit from videos nor I am a streamer or youtuber so I’m posting this only because I think it may help some people.

Disclaimer 2: I’m by no means a real DC6 pilot nor an expert so it can have plenty of errors. I appreciate any improvements that people can suggest.

Disclaimer 3: I really hate the AFE, from its very conception to the point of having it in the final product. I don’t use it but the sole fact of having it available makes me nervous.

Disclaimer 4: I have no intentions to evangelize anyone about disclaimer #3, I understand the AFE is wonderful for many simmers so I embrace that joy.

ā€œOK, dug around the PMDG forum - seems like you need to cycle the GPS/VLOC twice for it to ā€œtakeā€. So let’s try againā€¦ā€

Thanks for this info. Happy Flying and Regards from us.

Yip… Flick the AP switches on the Tablet and things seem to start working.

Continued issues with AP/Garmin…

Had another CTD when in flight playing with the GPS.

I know it’s the sim, not the DC-6, but some of its systems I suspect can trigger the crashes quite easily.

Then finally, by not touching the GPS too much, I was able to crash the actual airplane - and not the sim - on landing, after two hours of flight and finally some sound GPS navigation. I guess I’m conditioned too much by the Airbus and forgot to bring back the power after landing… so I hurdled towards the end of the runway and eventually bounced to my death

are you using the freeware GPS mod?

I like the AFE.
I find that while activated during Takeoff, Cruise & Descent modes in particular, it gives me the time & space to study the various dials & to learn what is going on, what settings it is using at any part of the flight.
This helps me to learn where settings need to be should I depart in a hurry & leave the AFE behind. :grinning:
I think that by having the AFE ā€˜optional’, PMDG have catered for the ā€˜cold start’ through to the ā€˜AFE does most of it’ spectrum of flyers who enjoy the DC-6.

Nope. In fact, then I would probably not point to the GPS

Asobo has delivered an unstable platform. One of their biggest issues I think - from some experimenting - is that they do not range check their variables. And another problem you see everywhere, is that they are sloppy with ā€˜state’ and initialization. So you have to press some buttons multiple times before it catches on. The thing might display GPS, but be in an un-initialized state. Then you have to press it to VLOC, and back to GPS. But depending on which system, if that happens throughout the sim, these uninitialized variables might have severe consequences down the line (e.g. crashes).

curious.
I’ve been doing some flight with the plane. with GPS mod and flying with autopilot bound to the GPS/CDI and did not suffer from CTDs.
I did notice that the vor/ils gauge does not work with vors though making it unusable. I did not try any ILS though.
same goes for the two VOR/ADF needle indicators, they don’t work.
