I think I hit a nerve with the tablet…
Robert answered me and was quite enfatic defending the tablet. You were absolutely right about it.
Oh dear.
Tred lightly now. If they pull your activation it’s like losing your DC-6 pilot license…
They do have the power… (oh, sorry, that’s just a bug… we’re working on it…)
So, you think the AFE is unrealistic? Do you really think anyone sane would be flying a DC-6 in real life solo, operating it all on his own without at least a co-pilot or flight engineer? I believe a flight engineer is even mandatory to operate a DC-6 legally (and safely).
I don’t think the AFE is unrealistic, I think it is very realistic for the reasons you said. I said I hate it and I have no problems with people that love him.
We simmers fly planes with 2, 3 4 or 5 man crews all the time, it’s fun to do that. If you want. You can find Tupolevs 154 and Concordes flying on Vatsim everyday with a single guy handling the plane.
But the AFE is optional and I just don’t use it. No problem.
Having a color coded page in a tablet with engine health IS unrealistic.
Having the ability to add fuel in flight IS unrealistic.
What I’m not liking is the very aggressive and contemptuous way of answering about user requests I’m seeing in the PMDG forums.
I might be completely wrong about not wanting the tablet but I asked respectfully and I have the right to like it or not.
As users we always ask for things we would like because maybe the developers can consider it. Developers can choose to include those ideas or no in their backlog but there’s no need to be aggressive or to mock a request.
Air Atlantique into Helsinki.
I noticed a gentle wallowing while getting to the airport perimeter at around 105 kia.
Not unpleasant, & controllable. Minimal cross wind.
Is that characteristic of the DC-6?
TG
Yes I agree with you, the reaction seemed somewhat aggressive. I like the idea of locking out pages while in the air, that sends like a good compromise, and you’d like to think easy enough to do without having to remove the whole tablet.
I’ve seen that also on the AeroSoft forum. I was hoping PMDG was a bit more customer centered. Is this a thread I can read or was it more private?
Changing the PLN file didn’t work. ATC still keeps nagging me. Internally it’s probably resetting those inputted values. I’ve now kicked them out by cancelling the IFR plan…
I found it in the dc-6 pages here (you need to sign in)
You can read it for sure, it is public.
I take it lightly, I’m not a very good writer and interpretation in forums is always an issue.
Sometimes I just wish we could just be more friendly towards each other, at the end we share something and that’s a reason to make friends, not to fight.
from a very good writer !
No you’re right. He’s snarky and sarcastic.
He does make the point I was also making: they need a place for the settings.
But he should just have explained it in a normal ‘tone’. I agree with you.
What I’m getting from these forums is that the people running them are extremely invested in their software. That’s a good thing. But sometimes not. They seem to have trouble detaching themselves from their ‘baby’. I was expecting it a little bit, as you know. When I wrote it it was a bit of a joke… but not totally… although I didn’t expect this level of ‘out of control’ response.
hm… i agree to disagree, though… he has its points…
the tablet is easy enough to be ignored…
Anyone know the most fuel efficient cruising altitude for the DC-6? Should that be around the 8,000-10,000 feet level, or up higher at 20,000+ feet with the superchargers on?
If you fly higher you go faster but burn more fuel. If you go lower it is slower but more fuel-efficient.
It’s something that is different between radial engines and jet engines, if you are used to a jet you want to go higher to burn less fuel but is not the case with the DC6.
I think 10000 to 13000 is the most fuel efficient range.
In the POH you have some charts, for my 14 hour flight I used the 1000 table.
That is 2020 rpm and 140 BMEP at 12000 ft. You have fuel consumption in the tables.
Great, thank you - I’m looking to see if I can stretch things out to get from Mexico City to Papeete in French Polynesia - that’s about 3,700Nm
Does the AFE handle the fuel tank management?
That’s a wonderful flight but I don’t think you can do it with the DC6, maybe if you catch favorable winds you can but there’s no close alternate if things go south.
For my 14hrs flight I landed with about 1500 lbs of fuel so I could have gone for a little more. And I was probably not very efficient handling the engines but I tried. Would love to get more reports about long-hauls to share settings and ideas.
But that’s what I don’t understand. Just like you chose not to use the AFE you can chose not to look at the engine status page of the tablet and not to chose to refuel in flight. The latter doesn’t even matter, because being able to refuel midair has always been possible with MSFS’s menu bar.
I understand that you don’t want to see the tablet in a vintage cockpit, and an option to make it invisible like in the Just Flight Piper Arrow would be cool, but when you retract it and switch it off its barely noticeable and pretty much out of sight.
Great Result ! Armed with a Written Checklist + Your Vid on the Laptop, we had a problem free Departure from Connellan. The main difference for me as regards not using the AFE is that it doesn’t say " C’mon SillyScrotum wake Up" when i Mis Click or forget Something.
The Screen shows us on the Approach to Connellan and we are looking forward to your Tutorial covering Climb Out. Cruise, Decent and Landing.
Ps. Regard the Port Outboard Prop. A Tutorial covering Engine Failure would be welcome also.
Thank’s again Luis and Kind Regards friom us.
