[Polls] Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) Sim Update 16 & 16.1 Feedback

New computer 5070ti didn’t bother with 2020, was happy with 2024 before now very smooth no issues , the odd ctd after long flight and lack of input to sim.

Agree with you 100%!
I just took this screen shot in FS2020, this morning - an RV10 circling EGLC. Everything in and out of the cockpit looks very sharp and detailed to me.
Just out of curiosity I did the same flight in FS2024 and didn’t see any differences except that I didn’t have photogrammetry active in it. I’ll include that photo at the end of this post.

(PC Store, RTX 3070 8GB, 12700 CPU, TAA, 40FPS capped on a 2K 120HZ monitor.)

If you’re interested, here are my compromised graphics settings. Don’t be too critical, though, being mindful that I don’t have the latest and greatest GPU.

If you are really interested, I can also provide my Windows and NCP settings, too.

And what’s with the “your bandwidth is too low for data streaming” messages I’ve been getting a lot more frequently (like, almost daily, and then several times when it happens) since SU16. I’ve got a 1Gbit connection, no issues with anything else. So stop lying to me Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)!

I’ve had a gutful with this “game” recently! And no, you’re not making me spend my money on anything else MSFS related, let alone 2024.

Are you using a VPN?

The sharpness of the 3D objects (aircraft and scenery) is not the problem. The terrain tiles from the satellite imagery are blurry at low altitudes due to a loss of resolution compared to the SU15 (a fourfold reduction).

Me too! Just did a few nights in 2024 and tried making it the best it could be (eg reshade and stacked every sharpening preset) but man when you then fly the same route in 2024 it isn’t even close to 2020.

Don’t get me wrong, without now the ability we have always had in 2020 to leverage 512 tiles and hence the 4x decrease in ground resolution to that was possible it is nowhere near as good as it has been pre su16. But 2024 doesn’t hold a candle to 2020 for aerial visuals and by looks of it su4 for 2024 has still not addressed this.

Hopefully they can provide an update on this highly requested work in the next developer stream. From memory they also mentioned there would be a SU 16.1 update. Crickets since then, but I’m hopeful we’ll see some traction on fixing these annoying lingering issues in the new year now that the PS5 version is out.

Why an option? They’re working on fixing it.

They moved to 2024.

After testing the SU4 in the 2024 I have a massive improvement about the sim performance in my PC, now I can get really stable fps and a good frame rate, but the MSFS2020 for me the performance is kinda bad. I tested in the same airport in both sims and in the 2020 I got 32 fps, and in the 2024 I got 56fps and sometimes 60+ fps.

I really don’t understand what happened, I noticed the drop in performance since SU15, now I get this bad performance in the sim, but on the middle of the year I was getting like 40 or 60 fps in the same scenarios

Certainly not. Lost faith in Microsoft/Asobo since SU16.(Regression of a purchased product.)

Indeed. Now that 2024 su4 and PlayStation are released, we can only pray they put some attention to 2020 and that a su16.1 can undo some of the damage done. Only time (and likely more time than anyone would wish) will tell.

Yeah, I thought the same way (from the very start) that after SU16 degradation, the dev would hardly turn back to msfs2020 to fix things. Time didn’t prove me wrong sadly, almost half a year on, we still have no sign a SU16.1 would even be around the corner.

I comprehend the dev team tho, now that fs24 SU4 and ps5 launch and they will spend even more time keep fixing stuff there.

Thankfully, msfs2020, despite all the downgrade, still feels so good and strong.

Yep. Would be refreshing if they instead of investing dev time in more of the Stranger Things “surprises” that they rather spent some of that energy into fixing things they broke like su16 .. would go along way to showing they haven’t abandoned their original core user base too.

At this point though they are moving solidly into gaming as the focus rather than simulation so maybe best we can hope is they don’t make 2020 or 2024 any worse for those that enjoy the non gaming parts and just live with what we have left. Hope I’m wrong and the next surprise is 16.1 to prove that wrong!

Fortunately, with my system (9800x3d/5080/64GB RAM) I managed partially fix the graphic downgrade inherited from MSFS2024 by raising the TLOD to 700 in cruise and lowering it to 200 during approach.

Spot on. On my 7800x3d / 4080 super I’m now running at 505 in cruise myself and 200 otherwise, using lossless 2x and capping at 48fps as base before fg. Best combo I have found so far as going any higher I start to reach the performance cliff that becomes intolerable.

Prior to su16 i ran at tlod 200 with no fg and was still better than 505 is now so they really did a job with this ‘update’ didn’t they.

what ? never heard of an ST5 surprise ? what’s it gonna be about ? will be in fs20 as well ?

Now released, and is for 2024 only. Like the Top gun or Dune ones basically. No interest myself and again they could have spent that and effort time instead on resolving su16

Oh man, I never before wished I had upgraded my PC more than I do now! RAM is so expensive now, and I’m still burning my 3060 (12GB of VRAM) and 5700G CPU with a measly 16 GB of RAM. Using TLOD 50 below 10,000 and 100 above that to get barely 30 FPS where in the past I could get TLOD 150 on the ground out of my system.

Those shots look awesome; well actually they look like FS2020 used to…

:downwards_button: And this is post-su16 on an 8-mile final at LAX :sad_but_relieved_face:

My TLOD setting hadn’t yet been pushed down to 50 yet, so both of those shots are TLOD 150.

I hope SU16.1 comes soon AND delivers, because I am not moving on to 2024 anytime soon and rewarding MSobo’s careless attitude towards this major regression. This update should have been canceled in light of countless beta-testers reporting massive LOD loss and aerial degradation, but the powers-that-be elected to release it anyway. Now they hold their heads in mock-despair and cry “we didn’t think this was going to happen, it was a genuine mistake” and then proceed to do nothing about it. One awful business decision after the next.
