Interesting….Scottydog03’s screenshot doesn’t appear degraded or colors wrong as he describes. It looks fine to me.
I have been lazy about trying to upload screenshots from the same areas to compare, as a previous poster suggested. But I have flown the same Thames river area as some posted and saw none of the anomalies in their screenshots.
Also interesting that another AMD user is reporting the same as me… Not making any assumptions…just interesting.
it would be good to hear from some more AMD users.
I do agree that it is subjective. Some may be more bothered by imperfect colors, etc.
Neverthe less, though I haven’t used FS2020 since day one, i have flown it since December 2024, pre SU16, and see absolutely no difference anywhere i fly (and i fly many different regions of the world… major cities, bush strips, carribean, etc.)
AMD user here. 2020 user since release. SU16 still looks the day SU16 was released for me (which means a lot worse than pre-SU16) where I do most of my flying (Australia and Africa).
My take for what it’s worth and as raised by many is that maps outside of tin areas are definitely worse since su16. Done more testing than I care to admit and while options exist for “working around”, the biggest issue by far with su16 is the lod which there is no workarounds for as it is the sim itself. If you’re parked at an airport and are at tlod 100, the mountains in mid to far distance are very blurry and far worse than the same situation was in su15. If you push tlod to say 400 you can see it gets sharper. Basically I used to max tlod at 200 and was happy with definition of mountains be on the ground at 100 or in air at 200. Since su16, they have changed this certainly and you need to double or more the tlod to get a similar result.
So if Asobo can change just one thing, is to either revert whatever they changed to how tlod works now, or add in a setting that we can adjust which just changes the terrain quality draw distance without whatever else tlod changes now that affects performance so much when you increase it.
Because of the tlod, i havent been able to buy any planes I wanted to get. When SU16 was beta about to launch, I had to hold off from buying anything if the sim becomes broken, and here we still are..
For those who haven’t seen, I recommend checking out the developer stream which occurred just 4 hours ago at around 12 minutes in.
Really happy with the outcome of how the texture degregation issue is being checked, acknowledged and responded to and great to know that a fix / re-consolidation of higher quality world textures will be worked on.
Was middle of the night here so couldn’t watch live but the acknowledgment of these issues and our feedback is highly appreciated!
While Seb’s answer to my question was “we didn’t mean to break anything”, it is at least an answer.
Must say the flight last night (around Nice so was PG area) had a huge amount of pop in as others have also noted, so certainly a lot of fixing needs doing and here’s hoping it isn’t 12 months till su17 beta for them to bring such fixes. I am certainly happy for testing a 16.1 update which Seb I recommend is just rollback to known good SU15 and try again!!
I watched as well and am cautiously optimistic that the issues will be resolved. As was stated, just acknowledging that there was an unintended negative impact on the scenery quality in MSFS2020 post SU16 is a step in the right direction. Fingers crossed.
I’m glad to hear that they still have the old Bing data and will bring the best quality between old and new aerial selectively. Hopefully it’s not another months of waiting.
Su17 is circa next northern hemisphere summer they did note, so yeah really hope we don’t have to live with su16 as is till then!
If say in 16.1 they could re-enable high resolution tiles capability, and revert the changes to lod, then wouldn’t mind as much if the ‘artistic’ part of blending maps needs a bit more time personally.
Being as su16 was what brought me to this forum (as I was perfectly content prior) it should be some consolation to everyone whom did the same that Jorg did note they do indeed read and review what is posted here. Let’s see what they can now do but don’t expect them to unwind the damage of su16 overnight I would caution.
The colours ARE the same for everyone. What is varying between users is the distance at which higher resolution ground textures pop in, how blurred the ground textures look, and the distance at which scenery objects pop in.
“… And I saw the same thing, the dark, nice, green, lush textures we had before are now a little bit more yellow, simply because the satellite images we got was later in the year when it was dry.
And so, we just looked at this. We actually had a meeting on this just this morning. And we still have the old textures around.
And now, so, obviously, I’m aware of the community thread, and we’re reading it. So, we’re going to do an exercise where we go through what is better, what is not, and make some creative choices. And I think it’s going to, I basically said, so, our director should be part of this.
Because a lot of it is an artistic decision, what actually feels more vibrant and more fun. But we’ll work on this, and we’ll get back to you exactly how we do it. But the theory is we can create our own world, which is kind of a blend of what Bing has and what’s great for Flight Simmers.
And then we’ll come up with a hopefully optimal solution for us all. Nice.”
