No is the short answer. MSFS still has an eye candy advantage over xplane in most circumstances, and reason I know is out of desperation after several years of happily enjoying MSFS, su16 drove me to try xplane in the past few months in the hope that I could get some relief.
Antialiasing among many other areas needs a lot of work from a visual perspective. Sorry no salvation to be had, and again we can only plead Asobo to roll back whatever drove them to release su16.
For MSFS though I would encourage all to read the full thread on this forum regarding 2024 blurry aerials and lod issues. Itās basically a carbon copy in many places of what we now have been saying in 2020 since su16 and a year later for 2024 still not fixed. But as I have said, now that we canāt enjoy the same visual in 2020, the entire customer base is affected so perhaps there is some hope that this will bring it up the priority list (after ps5 release .. letās not kid ourselves)..
As most feedback here (mine included) as to root cause of much of su16 visual issues is speculative, took the liberty of reaching out to a brilliant dev in the community whom I thought would certainly have insights (canāt say who but you might be able to guess). Really to learn more about the technical aspects of how 2020 and 2024 does aerial tiles and if my assumptions of Asobo aligning code between 2024 and 2020 is likely correct. Not sure if this is good or bad for any hope of them restoring 2020 to its former glory but..
Looking at it from the high resolution 512x512 aerials standpoint:
1. Su15 and prior of 2020 could support and consume high resolution aerials
2. Su16 as we know does not (at all) and has not done so since beta was released through to its final release
3. However importantly 2024 does in fact accept 512 resolution but the final rendering in the sim downscales to 256 resolution. Likely due to how it combines different layers like season overlays etc is the theory.
So.. unfortunately my assumptions seem not to be correct as to some sort of 2024 code back porting being the cause. Therefore looks to be specific to 2020 and whether intentional or not means not aligning of worlds / code.
Regardless of the cause the outcome for both sims is now the same, no high resolution is possible.
FS2020 is not as important for Asobo as FS2024.
Most of the development effort goās to FS2024.
I donāt expect more development on the old sim then some things that are been ported from FS2024 to FS2020. And i is possible that FS2020 suffers from that.
With the sheer amount of regressions packed into su16, it really does make one wonder whether was intentionally done to drive people to 2024 yes.
Seb was quick to say that was not the case in last live stream - as chatter to this affect was occurring since release.
Or perhaps that so much focus on 2024 that the ball was really dropped hard just due to lack of dev attention. Any of this is speculation and will never be known of course.
Given new structure of weekly updates to have a dedicated development update, I will be very interested if they continue to keep us unaware of whatās next or they do provide any updates that might give us in turn some hope for the future.
There is no hope for MSFS2020 in the future.
MSFS2020 is slowly dying, because all efforts goās to his successor MSFS2024.
Wait a few years and you can push the delete button.
I too would like to say and think intentional sabotage is not at all at play too, but after what I have read of su5 regressions I do reach for my tin cap.
I go back to my first post on this forum after I joined here after su16 took away so much from something I very much enjoyed .,. Everything was fun.. then su16.
Given chasing $ from PlayStation is now the focus ( and thatās just business so I get it), I just really do wish they could perhaps even for minimal effort give us back a su15 toggle in the sim!
I donāt think that will be done, there is no specific development of FS2020.
They only porting things from FS2024 to FS2020 like they are doing with the scenery.
The tiles has a lower resolution then the original ones.
Asobo had better stopped completely with FS2020 and leave it in his original state.
Well Iām quite grateful with 2020 now after few weeks with 2024. Anything related to LOD and sharpness is just way better in 2020 than 2024, even after it was blurred out by an update. Itās like metal vs plastic.
New computer 5070ti didnāt bother with 2020, was happy with 2024 before now very smooth no issues , the odd ctd after long flight and lack of input to sim.
Agree with you 100%!
I just took this screen shot in FS2020, this morning - an RV10 circling EGLC. Everything in and out of the cockpit looks very sharp and detailed to me.
Just out of curiosity I did the same flight in FS2024 and didnāt see any differences except that I didnāt have photogrammetry active in it. Iāll include that photo at the end of this post.
(PC Store, RTX 3070 8GB, 12700 CPU, TAA, 40FPS capped on a 2K 120HZ monitor.)
If youāre interested, here are my compromised graphics settings. Donāt be too critical, though, being mindful that I donāt have the latest and greatest GPU.
And whatās with the āyour bandwidth is too low for data streamingā messages Iāve been getting a lot more frequently (like, almost daily, and then several times when it happens) since SU16. Iāve got a 1Gbit connection, no issues with anything else. So stop lying to me Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)!
Iāve had a gutful with this āgameā recently! And no, youāre not making me spend my money on anything else MSFS related, let alone 2024.
The sharpness of the 3D objects (aircraft and scenery) is not the problem. The terrain tiles from the satellite imagery are blurry at low altitudes due to a loss of resolution compared to the SU15 (a fourfold reduction).
Me too! Just did a few nights in 2024 and tried making it the best it could be (eg reshade and stacked every sharpening preset) but man when you then fly the same route in 2024 it isnāt even close to 2020.
Donāt get me wrong, without now the ability we have always had in 2020 to leverage 512 tiles and hence the 4x decrease in ground resolution to that was possible it is nowhere near as good as it has been pre su16. But 2024 doesnāt hold a candle to 2020 for aerial visuals and by looks of it su4 for 2024 has still not addressed this.
