[Polls] World Update 22: United States National Parks

That’s not the only issue with the music in Discovery Flights - have you noticed what happens when you toggle on and off POI markers?

I found the cause. I have bound the “toggle visual assistance” and “toggle vr mode” to one button. Seperated them, and turned visual assistance on in the setup and it’s fine.

I found lower fps in WP22 areas than in big cities. It might be caused by higher LOD, DEM and TIN resolution. Have you encountered that?

In FS2020, I get a slideshow with the recent Amsterdam and California updates. Have not tried Australia – I must though. All PG older than those works flawlessly. I’ve definitely seen this before.

You should start a dedicated thread; it will be easier for people interested in this topic to follow in the future.

No - you might want to consider filing a bug (if you are suggesting there is one) if there is no existing bug that covers the issue.

If all the planes are 1:1, and that works, it seems to be a bizarre leap to model anything else not 1:1.

Yeah sorry for misunderstanding, I know it is easy to model to scale, but only if you want to do so (or you are used to!)

I have plenty of people asking me how we know the height of a e.g. an hangar they have only pictures of (and a satellite image) . So we suggest to take doors measurements in the image and compare to standard doors and make proportions and bla bla. Game 3d modelers most often don’t have blueprints, so comparison is the the only way to have correct scale. I don’t think Gaya’s artist went to each poi with a measuring tape

So without references and or comparison, when you place the model in sim it most often look small (even with correct size)..

you know in small airfields in game grass is quite tall, a correct scalded runway cone get lots very Easy!

Just trying to find an explaination about where the scaling issue may come from

(About tenders for interior, I have this recent experience,

The bookshelf can’t exist, because the space right to the door is no more than 5cm. But the render still manage to be plausible- cat don’t think so)

Funny thing is I could have sworn I did over a year ago, but can find no trace - I’ll get to it today. The TL;DR is that toggling POI’s (with the Show Visual Assistances keybind) also toggles the music

From the few trips I have made in the parks…I think they are fabulous and the scenery is stunning!
I will definitely be visiting more of the areas over the coming weeks.
If this is the way ahead …FS24 is definitely going to get better and better!
Well done to all involved.

One thing I’m surprised I have not seen mentioned here is the unfortunate choice of the DA62 for the Grand Teton Guided Tour. I cannot think of a more visually-restrictive cockpit in the sim short of the Spirit of St. Louis  For those of us that prefer sightseeing from the cockpit, this was a poor choice in my opinion - and another reason why it would be great to have this be customizable instead of fixed.

Sorry, lolll. Bookcases like that, as long as it’s not a bearing wall, you can remove the stud there and build the bookcase up to the wall board on the other side of the wall, which could gain you 5", plus the 3 inches that they built it out from the wall into the door trim. I’ve done it before. 8" is plenty deep for a bookcase.

That being said, I’m only being pedantic there, lol. I get you on everything you’re saying there.

Badlands National Park.
Having camped out in the backcountry in this park back in the '80s, I was curious to see how well this was rendered. The terrain detail is excellent (I could even find my old camping site in the backcountry), but the color rendition is rather muted. Here is a pic near dry creek on the western border of the park. You can see the banding between the different geologic layers:

But compared to my memory and the pics on the National Park website, the contrast between the layers is missing. I think this is hard to capture. The best time to see the formations is in the early morning or late evening, when the sun is low on the horizon, but I suspect the photogrammetry for this was taken during the late morning or early afternoon to minimize shadows, which naturally tends to wash out the colors.

The White River Visitor Center is very well done. The only major “complaint” I have is that one cannot climb the stairs to the porch to read the information sign.

All the signs are in high-def, can be read, and are not generic but actually about the park, which is appreciated.

If the two poles out front are supposed to be flagpoles, then including the national and state flags would have been nice. The POI also includes the park offices and buildings behind the visitor center, and the picnic area (but without a water tap - and yes - I look for such things on my avatar walks - we avatars get thirsty too!).

None of the POI buildings can be entered.

So I give this an 8 /10 rating on my personal SmotheryVase scale. Well done!

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
This is another really well-done national park, with excellent ground resolution and a well-rendered POI. For those that have not been there, note that there are 3 separate units. The North & South units are separated by ~ 40NM, with the Elkhorn Ranch unit along the Little Missouri river between them. I opened the maps on the Park Service website on another display to guide where I was going to fly while visiting.

For example, this pic was taken following the Secenic Loop Drive in the park showing the resolution that can be achieved in 2024. It’s easy to follow the routes of the individual hiking trails from the air:

The colors (like Badlands NP) are often muted compared to real-life. For example, compare this screenshot:

with this picture on the NP website.

I think the cliff face by the Little Missouri river in my screenshot is the same as that shown in the park pic, but if not, you get the idea. Greens are a bit greener and the various colors of the rock strata more vibrant in the NP website pics.

In some places the colors are a better match - this shot was taken over the Elkhorn Ranch unit:

Hiking the Petrified Forest Loop Trail in the western section of the south unit. No petrified wood to be seen (I’d be very surprised to see this at this level of ground resolution, good as it is). You can still follow the trail quite easily - but with no signs on the trail (I was not expecting to see any), be careful of wandering off down one of the side trails. There is a lot of potential for 3rd-pary addons here…:

The painted Canyon Visitor Center is well done, but you cannot enter it. Perhaps this is related to the price-point of the WU (free!). Oh - and there are no water taps at the picnic tables for thirsty avatars out in the noon-day sun in this park either ! :upside_down_face:

All the signs are readable & relate to the NP:

You can take a very pleasant stroll along the edge of the escarpment while your Joby is recharging its batteries:

So, another 8 /10 rating on my personal SmotheryVase scale. Well done! :+1:

Great update but sadly it adds an uncountable amount of spikes where the underlying algorithm could not recognize trees.

Just flying around Monument Valley, I discovered a lot of sunken structures. Buildings have the correct lat/long position, but are half submerged.

Also large holes in the terrain - south of Oljeto airfield for example.

Wind Cave National Park.
Brown and grey dominate this landscape:

I noticed that there is very little color variation over the course of the year. If you pick a spot (this is at the end of the service road off Wind Cave Road), and compare the same spot, the underlying textures appear identical throughtout the year, with only minor vegetation changes, e.g.:

High summer in July, when the annual grasses have all died off:

Springtime (March). I’d expect to see some greening of the terrain with all the annual grasses and wildflowers that have sprouted after the snows had melted, but the ground textures are the same:

A panoramic view of the same area in July:

…and in March:

Grasslands and prairies are particularly noticable as they are not covered by woodlands or forest that can help disguise the fact that the underlying ground textures are not changing with the seasons.

If you compare to the pictures on the National park website - for example the shots of the Visitor Center, Beaver Creek Bridge and Rankin Ridge Fire Tower here - you can see how green the park is during the spring.

[Note: the Rankin Ridge Fire Tower would make for a good POI in a future update!]

Because of this, and the lack of any park POIs, I’ve given this park a 6/10 rating on my personal SmotheryVase scale.

Feedback on the U.S National Parks – WOW! – You did a great job on what I’ve seen so far, the Canyonlands Park and Arches area of Utah is fantastic! Well done!

Fly it in a helicopter and prepare to have your socks knocked off.

Thanks, I’m roughly working from east to west. Not sure when I’ll get to those two. The Joby is a helicopter - sort of - and has great visibility too for these types of low-level flights. :slightly_smiling_face:

Shiprock National Natural Landmark POI
Couple of small items of note on this landmark that are not worth bug reporting IMO (perhaps just note for a future update).

First, there is an elevation mismatch between the POI & underlying terrain when viewed from afar on my PC - note the blue gap in the rock. This pic was taken from Shiprock airstrip (5V5)

Some of the rocks at the base of the POI appear / disappear based on ones distance from them - e.g.:

and finally, the rock textures are generic. I seem to recall that in real life there are many names & initials on this rock, carved by the early settlers who passed by in their wagons as they headed west. For those that might have hoped that this bit of Americana was viewable, note that these are not rendered in this representation of the National Natural Landmark.
