Might this problem be connected with the apparently current server issues?
Thatās a good point. Iāve flown UK and Switzerland today and itās been pretty awful in both places.
Yes, Iām aware. My guess is itās related to the sim loading issues people are currently experiencing.
Sim loading issues yes or graphics popping in and out around your plane in large chunks or tiles.
The fact that now the world updates are better than the previous ones it is because they are directed to msfs2024, I think this is a small taste of what we will have in the new sim
Thatās fine and I understand that reasoning. But whatās the second update that automatically appears in the content manager upon arriving in the sim ? it was called World Update UK and Ireland. What are those files ? They were reportedly 1 or 2GB at the time, expanding to much larger than that installedā¦
Everytime there is a World Update why do I need a content manager download AND a marketplace download to fully install it? Itās not the sizes I care about, its the doubling of the work, the illogical process that is not obvious to me at all.
I come back here and discuss this because it was exactly the same weirdness with the Germany and Austria III update today. It began with a Standard Content update (the Release Notes said āErrorā - so incredibly useful). In arriving into the sim, the content manager had a World Update for Germany and Austria III, it was 1GB to download decompressed 5/6GB I think - pretty hefty by anyones standards. And that to me very much seemed like the WU and I believed it was installed after thatā¦ For the heck of it I went into Marketplace - awaiting FREE purchas was the WU Germany / Austria III, and that was 11GB expanding to 25/26GB - what the hell ? What are all these downloads ?
People might think Iām getting annoyed about something silly, and youād absolutely be right. Itās not fundamnetally important. But this download logic is not very apparent to Iād guess most people. I ONLY found about it with UK and Ireland as I lived there before and was pretty excited for it, and I wonder how many WUās Iāve not downloaded in thinking that the Content Manager update was the actual World Updateā¦ I donāt mind having the majority installed as Iāve a fast PC and a 2 TB drive.
If this was something that was mentioned in a livestream or on a spurious MSFS webpage that no one ever looks at, how are people going to know what to do when theyāre region or a region they want to see an update for drops ? For sure, some of you are in the know and now so am I, but its not at all obvious that a WU requires two toally seperate downloads.
Some people might not want to instal the WU, so thatās one reason why itās an optional install via the MP.
As for the other install, when WU17 was released, and London got a lick of paint, I also had a āMy Contentā update as WU3 for updated as well, which was the first UK update.
If I didnāt have WU3 installed, I wouldnāt have had the āMy Contentā update at all.
Just to confirm the same thing happens here. I have WU6 installed, so it has some updates in āMy Contentā, specifically these.
Then I download the new WU18 from the MP.
Iāve noticed an issue tonight - perhaps coincidentally after installing WU18.
Flying over Edinburgh the photogrammetry is there, but Arthurās Seat is back to being covered with trees, as it was before WU17.
Iām not sure if itās just my install, or if something in the latest update has goosed the last one.
Is this happening to anyone else?
On Xbox Series X btw.
See existing report: Arthurās Seat hill (Edinburgh) covered in trees
I noticed some mismatched aerials today in Wales.
Seems the Snowdonia region has some aerial imagery taken in shadow. In the images (taken in the vicinity of Beddgelert) you can see the join. Flying at low level, the lack of detail in the shadowed area is pretty noticeable, seems much like that being reported for the Alpine region in the latest update.
Of course, depending on the time of day, the baked in shadows conflict with the sim generated shadows.
The marketplace update is to update several things, including the addition of the new World/City update. The content manager piece is to allow users to both update their existing scenery (with new changes) and/or choose to install the newest update if they want.
I usually install every live world/city update, so I agree for us itās annoying. But I know other people that donāt install them at all except for the regions they want.
Itās been over a month since this WU was released, so here are my responses that I entered into the poll in the first post of this topic, and short replies to each question:
-
Did you experience any CTDs during this download process? No
-
How were your download speeds? Average
Speeds varied between ~16 Mbps to ~57 Mbps. The upper value is about 23% of my maximum download rate. -
On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, how do you like the new photogrammetry and POIs? 10
Great POIs, excellent photogrammetry except the water / land issue reported for some bridges (e.g.London). -
On a scale of 1-10, 10 being smoothest, how is your performance/stability in this update? 8
Iāve had no crashes or freezes, so stability for this WU is 10. However, performance - as measured by FPS - has dropped slightly when flying above the new TIN cities at low level (1,000 - 3,000 ft) & conducting flight operations around the handcrafted airports. The higher-fidelity rendering has caused around a 5% decrease in framerates. -
Is your performance/stability worse, the same, or better than before the World Update? Same
The drop in FPS is generally not noticeable. FPS still is at or above 30 FPS when flying GA aircraft, so flights are still as smooth as before. -
On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, how would you globally rate this update? 9
