[Polls] World Update XVIII: Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

snow coverage has been horrible since the beginning. It’s a bit better but still far from realistic. Nothing to do with the Update though.

Collision mesh prevents exploring the interiors of the handcrafted airports with the drone camera in WU18-I hope this is fixed in MSFS 2024, as I do like exploring interiors from time to time with the drone camera as well as glancing at them from my plane’s cockpit.

Collision meshes like to do withthese were in the SDK backlog but never fixed so far.

There must have been some improvement made, as I used to get snow on the ground at Meiringen AFB which is near high mountain peaks, at any time during the summer, even in 30 deg/C heat. But now the snow has receded to almost the correct elevation. I wish MSFS would tell us about it, as it looks like they have managed to do something with Meteoblue.

ok, that is accepted, as we wish the glitches we are still seeing in 2020 will not be present in 2024 - even if I fear the first release will function like some kind of Beta version, as has been the case for many years now.

Yeah tried that with a few different servers as you suggested, sadly nothing has changed at EDDM. The buildings that are supposed to be on the left hand side of the airport still haven’t rendered.

All that there is, is a blue line, or a ‘wall’ that varies when you move.

Bad choice of words on ny part. Yes there have been several improvements and it’s no longer horrible but also still not realistic

I don’t consider MSFS to be a beta. Never did. Yes, some things didn’t work well in the beginning and some didn’t work at all, sone still don’t. But still from the beginning the whole simulation (and let’s not forget they are trying to simulate a whole planet) was clearly superior in almost all respects to FSX, and it was superior in many respects to XPlane which had been in continuous development for over 15 years.
Fact of the matter is: MSFS will never be finished. Even if some day all aspects of flying should be integrated to 100% realism people will still want the surrounding world to be perfect too. If MSFS should still be a thing in 2040 people will probably call for dog walkers to pick up dog poo in Central Park to make it mire realistic …

I have made an interesting discovery. I am also unhappy with the appearance of the Alps and some cities since the last WU. So I tried to rollback the WU. But neither my home town of Frankfurt nor the Alps looked as good as before after the uninstall. Some people have already described this similarly here.

Now I’m currently on vacation and playing MSFS via cloud gaming. I haven’t yet installed the latest world updates in the online version. And lo and behold, Frankfurt and the Alps look like they did before the last WU. So there must actually be a way to return to this state on the PC too. In any case, it is not due to the streamed data that a rollback has not yet been possible ob PC.

Edit: Unfortunately I have to correct myself. Frankfurt looks like it did before the update. Unfortunately, the Alps are not. In the case of Frankfurt, this is easy to see because photogrammetry was missing for some parts of the city after the update. Now these districts are back.

Thank you for your feedback and time. Sorry for the late reply. You are right. I got the content from WU18 mixed up with what is from the Berlin landmarks add-on.

In the add-on the Steglitz tower looks finished, like it used to be before the current modernization started. With the add-on the crane is still visible and looks out of place.

The TV tower, because of its height, is a tempting target for a fly-by and when getting close, the handcrafted version in the add-on looks better, so I keep it installed for now.

I did notice the green tint on some buildings. I wasn‘t aware that it appears from a specific direction. I wanted to checkout if it is connected to shadows and depends on the time of day, but I haven‘t gotten around to that yet.

I have checkout out some other places in Berlin and overall it looks really great.

Ok, I’m at a bit of a loss. I have now also installed the latest World Update in the online version via Cloud Gaming. But now all the eastern districts of Frankfurt, which were missing on my PC after installing the WU as photogrammetry, are still there. On my PC you could definitely only see autogen buildings. I have deleted the rolling cache several times.

Does anyone know the problem that photogrammetry is only partially shown in some cities, although it should be there? I actually noticed this in New York and Los Angeles too. For example, when approaching KLAX Runway 24L, I saw the autogen buildings instead of photogrammetry. A few kilometers towards the city center, the photogrammetry was displayed correctly again. Apparently I have the same problem in Frankfurt. Has anyone ever had similar problems and knows a solution?

How do you feel about the handcrafted EDDM airport? I whined a little in another post because my adjustments for the original airport turned more or less useless because of terraforming issues coming from the WU EDDM. But another thing is just as concerning. I removed my taxisign adjustment project to search the new airport for other improvements.

The buildings are fantatstic. It has become a beautiful airport. The signs are correct, placed correctly, nicely done. Oh, of course there are some ground markings for taxiwas that point in the wrong direction, but the motorways now arranged under impressive taxiway bridges is baffling.

Now, why does all this need to come with a completely impossible fps-drop and jerking camera movement along with awful drone excursions over the place? I had the impression that the Asobo team did all they could to improve smothness by reducing cpu load.

This new pretty EDDM is impossible to sim around, way worse (not comparable) than EGGL, EDDF, EKCH, LFMN, LIRF, LEMD, LEBL, LPPT. I have not checked american large airports.

But I have uninstalled EDDM airport from the update pack. Sadly. And yes, I have a very weak system (GTX 1070, I5-9600K). However that works with the long list but not with the newest MSFS addon.

As expected: not a single word in yesterday’s DEV Q&A… There was a moment where Jorg could have picked that up. He mentioned the release of WU18 and he also stated that they have seen the feedback about the 707.

So that’s exactly what we meant above: If the devs and teams read, please give us a quick heads-up to confirm that we are heard and how you plan to handle that pretty obvious and huge bug.

Hello people, there is a great guy on Flightsim.to who is trying to hide the problems of the shady slopes in Switzerland with the add-on Switzerland Tree Fix. Works quite well

Thanks for mentioning my mod :))
Still: MS / Asobo really need to give us better aerial maps again. It’s not possible to fix this mess with a mod.

I’d love to see the mesh collisions removed so we can explore the parts with interiors modelled with the drone camera or walk-around mode with MSFS 2024 come Nov 19th.

Did some flights over Berlin-it’s so stunning now with WU18!

Reading this discussion and other posts on visual degradation gives me a sense of solace that I didn’t buy the visual add-ons to improve cities, scenery, and airports, otherwise the game would have been a nightmare to run on Xbox, I imagine, following the memory utilisation changes in SU15.

I think I’m going to add a wishlist item for that, as I don’t think they will consider this a bug, as the system probably works as expected.

Edit: added a wishlist item for the shadow problem, so go and vote here:

Reading these reports make me glad I haven’t installed WU18 (yet). I did have all the CUs and WUs prior to uninstalling and reinstalling the game as “vanilla” as possible with only a bunch of 3rd party planes as ‘extras’, post reinstallation.

I believe some of you may have already read my feedback on how sharp and visually pleasing the world generally looks without the CUs and all the other free updates, such as seafront vessels, object libraries, etc.

A quick question while I’m here: am I really missing out on any “breathtaking scenery” by not installing the latest WU? Germany, Switzerland, and Austria look really good to me right now, albeit some bland or odd looking airports as I do not have the latest WU or any of the CUs installed. My main goal is to make the sim look as visually pleasing and run as smoothly as possible, so I think it’s probalby best I don’t install WU18 yet, what are your thoughts?

To anyone who is experiencing issues with visual degradation on xbox, just do a clean reinstall and install the WUs only, nothing else. Turn off live AI traffic and reduce the sliders below that to around 80, and lower for fauna.

Anyhow, I don’t think WU18 is worth installing in its current state as I did notice the odd looking (half bald) mountains with blurry textures and missing details. Would still love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who have explored Germany, Austria, and Switzerland at length, following WU18 - is it worth it? Am I missing out on anything major in terms of visuals or aviation “adventure”?

As if this would make any difference. Whether you installed it or not, the aerials are updated either way. You can only install the Airports, POI and Missions. But DEM and Aerials are done on server side whether you install a world update or not.
