Potential hardware upgrade

Hi All,

I am looking at potentially upgrading my GPU to the RTX 3080. I’m not very tech savy so I said I would ask the pros

I have a GTX 1080 with a i7 6700k CPU 16GB DDR4 2133Mhz and Asus Z170 - Pro Gaming.

my question is, would it be advisable to just upgrade my GPU?

RXT3080
I7 6700k
DDR4 2133Mhz
Asus 7170 Pro gaming.

sorry, if does not make to much sense, as I said not at all tech savy lol

thanks
Kev

Probably not.

The 6700k will heavily bottleneck a 3080 I’m sure.

See if you can overclock your RAM and CPU though

Thanks for the advice!

would I need a new RAM and MOBO if I was to upgrade to I7 10700k?

You will need a new motherboard.

Your RAM will “work” but it is quite slow for a 10700K. What RAM kit is it?

(you may be able to get a decent overclock out of the ram)

I would personally wait until the 11th gen intel comes out and just go all out then. Also by this time any big fixes for these new graphics cards will be fixed next year considerably

That could be in 6 months. 10th gen is quite new

Thanks guys,

as silly as this may sound, I’m not even sure what RAM kit I have!

PC gaming can become quite expensive!!

Yeah it can. I’d recommend getting a 10700K + MSI Z490 A-Pro, the cheapest Z490 motherboard with a good VRM

Thank you very much, I will certainly take your suggestion onboard.

much difference between i9 and i7? is it a worthwhile jump?

10900K is hard to find. I wouldnt say so. I mean tbh even the i5-10600K could be worth considering

Doesn’t appear to be any shortage of 10900Ks in the UK, and Newegg have them in stock in the US.

Really? That would be good.

I still wouldnt say it’s worth it though, unless you need 10 cores

I have
i7 6600k
980ti (I sold my 1080ti before the nvidia 3000 cards came out so i can get the most money for it)
32GB 3200MHz RAM
3440x1440
locked FPS at 30
runs decently, but slow for the first 10 seconds (before the last update, it took 4 minutes for MSFS to run well)

What resolution are you running? If it’s 1080p, then a new GPU will be bottlenecked by the CPU
I’d say the first thing you should do is upgrade your RAM to 3200MHz. 16GB ($70) should be fine, but I’d recommend 32GB ($105 on Newegg). See how that runs and decide if you want faster performance since that RAM can be used on a replacement CPU/Mobo.

I’m also getting a 3080 (well, tryiing to) and I don’t expect issues, but if I decide to upgrade my CPU and motherboard, then i’m waiting for the new Ryzen CPUs to come out. They’ll be announced in 2.5 weeks. I would get the Ryzen 5600 (3600XT replacement) for about $220 - $250 and a new motherboard (~125 for you for a B550 chipset motherboard). (Intel alternative is 10600k for $300)

“IF” a 3080 runs well on my current setup, then I will try to hold off for 1.5 - 2 years when DDR5 comes out as well as PCIe 6.0. With RTX IO by Nvidia, that combination will hopefully bring a nice performance boost to not only gaming, but the overall system.

Also, if you get a 3080, check the wattage of your power supply. I’d recommend 750w.

I’ve current good experience with my system

  • ASUS GTX 1080
  • Intel 8700K - overclocked 5 GHz
  • Asus Z370 F_Gaming Board
  • Kingston 32 GB RAM
  • 2 x Samsung SSD M.2 EVO Plus 1 TB
  • 2x 32’’ Dell monitors
  • Steering with XboX Game pad :upside_down_face:

I flight with 4k Resolution with max. details and approx. 25-60 fps.
I recommend regarding RTX 3080. - Wait, It is to early!!!
Here in Germany shared some websites, that we can expect next year the Special Edition RTX 3080 version with 20 GB RAM! From my perspective I can wait with buy to a new graphic card.

I’m also considering waiting for the 20GB. I use VR and MSFS 2020 is going to use more than 10GB of VRAM at maximum settings. Cost is the deciding factor for me (I’m expecting it to be $900).

It it a diffacuilt task to overclock?

With that cpu and if you played at 1080p it would most likely bottleneck that video card. Would it be better than what you have? Most likely. You just won’t be using it to its full potential is all. If you plan on upgrading everthing else in the future it wouldn’t be a bad place to start. I would also make sure your power supply is up to it.

Good luck actually finding one though.

Not really. Depend from your mainboard. I use the overclock assistent from the mainboard. That’s easy to configure the settings and is really stable. Of course there are other opportunities to tune the processor and components but that is me to hot and unsafe. I’m not the overclocker and specialist. I need this machine also for my office therefore I need an stable potent and fast machine. In my spare time (bad weather outside!) its the current PC power completely enough for fluency MFS game.

Some example pictures with different location. The MFS runs smoothly
Of course I recognized also the message within the MFS dev monitor (right side) that the 1080 GTX GPU is the real bottleneck. But it is ok for me! :innocent:

I was able to order a 3080 today, so I’ll see how much better it is with my 6600k. I will also change my DDR4 speed from 3200MHz to 2133MHz to see how much of a difference it makes.

Edit: My brother as a new computer (the CPU is an AMD 3800x and he has a 1080ti). I’ll have him test out the card, too.
