I experience that a lot of runways has their fixes wrong or the runways are completely off from where they actually should be according to the approach procedure i get from navigraph. For exemple I was doing a vordme approach to a large size 5 airport outside of Tripoli, Libya. On final everything was set correctly and my course was perfectly aligned with the runway heading 117 degrees but the actual runway was at my 10 o clock.
Another approach was Rnav Rwy 13 in Kraljevo, Serbia. Everyhing was again set perfectly according to navigraph and the plane was suppose to start descending from 3000 on the last fix down to runway but it started descending way before the fix which resulted plane being too low and had to do a go around.
Anyone else experiencing this?
The VORDME is probably not aligned with the runway. It will be offsite to the side, so you are right on it, but not the runway. Some are, some are not.
For example:
This was where I landed on my last flight. I had radioed ahead for a full stop landing, and was instructed to land on RWY 8. I tuned to the VORDME MQG, and dialed in for an approach on 080.
Knowing it was offset to the left, I did not attempt to keep the CDI right on the line, otherwise the runway would be off to my right. Instead, I used it as a guide to get me lined up with the runway, and the receiver indicated I was on the right heading, but off to the right.
Following those direction slavishly is similar to truck drivers that follow GPS into rivers, or down little country lanes they can’t navigate.
VOR should not be used as a substitute for ILS, but in the case of Waddington AB (EGXW), ILS should not be used as ILS!
Ok, I’m still learning here but isn’t VORDME supposed to always get you aligned with the runway?
That’s what an ILS is for. The VOR is to get you to the vicinity of the airport, and in this case, flying in the right direction.
In may case above, I was flying in from the East, on a rough left downwind for runway 08. I passed a few miles North of the VORDME, past it, then turned left until I was at right angles to my desired course. I allowed the CDI to intersect, then travelled a little further before turning on to final. The runway was in front of me, but the CDI was not aligned, as I expected.
You’ll often find NDB’s aligned with a runway, though, as in this case.
What we don’t have, for the G1000 for example, is an OBS button for GPS, and in that case you could do what you describe, going into OBS mode, then change your CRS to align with the runway heading. The magenta line would rotate to align with the runway, and you follow it in.
Now I understand. Thanks for your explanation:+1:
