This week, Pimax put out a new version of PimaxPlay (1.34.02.01). It includes the ability to run OpenXR natively in the software, which I think most of us assumed would streamline performance by removing extra layers of software.
However, this morning I was doing a flight in MSFS 2020, and had notably choppier and slower performance. In retrospect, I also noticed it in MSFS 2024, but assumed it was part of that sim just settling in. I reverted my OpenXR to the @mbucchia’s control center’s version, and am back up to where I should be in MSFS 2020 at least.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but I was seeing 5-10% worse performance with notably worse choppieness as well.
Hey OP, which version of Windows & DirectX you’re on?
I’m on Windows 11 23H2. DirectX 11 for MSFS 2020 and of course DirectX 12 for MSFS 2024 (it seems to affect both).
I noticed about the same drop in performance with the new Pimax Play version in MSFS 2020 and 2024 and in another flight sim and reverted just like you.
2024 performance is not a pimax play or runtime issue. It’s a msfs2024 issue itself. This VR “improvement” is a mess multiplied by 100 in comparison to the regular 2D game.

Hey Jaap, since 2024 is using a lot of vram and ram, the resolution we are using is nowhere near 2020s. Is there any plan to offer a 60hz solution for the Crystal Light so we can use Smart Smoothing at 30fps?
