Hello everyone,
I’m excited to announce the public beta release of AiTC, an AI-powered voice ATC system specifically designed to deliver a realistic VFR experience within Microsoft Flight Simulator, currently focused on the French area / French language
.
Résumé en français à la fin du post.
What is AiTC?
AiTC is a voice-only ATC interface powered by AI and real-world ATC logic and data. It works without menus or scripted responses: just speak using your aircraft radio, and the system responds with contextually appropriate ATC interactions.
It is designed to support the core elements of a VFR flight, including traffic pattern operations, local flights in and around aerodromes, and cross-country navigation.
There is no need to use a mouse or interact with on-screen menus or dialog boxes. However, you are expected to have up-to-date aeronautical charts and a working knowledge of VFR phraseology ![]()
Why another addon, and why focus on VFR in France?
Over the past few years, large language models have made AI-based ATC technically possible. The concept is exciting: speak naturally, get contextual responses, remove menu-driven interactions. And it fits particularly well with the IFR world, which is complex but also highly standardized.
VFR, however, has its own form of complexity, because operations are deeply regional:
- Phraseology is specific and sometimes subtle
- Local visual reporting points are central to traffic sequencing
- Circuit joining and departure instructions vary significantly between fields
- AFIS operations differ fundamentally from controlled aerodromes
- FIS interactions follow their own procedural logic
- Local terrain and airspace structure shape practical habits
- etc.
To address that challenge, AiTC was built around a simple philosophy: start with a limited, well-understood operational scope, and do it properly.
Then why France? Simply because the project was initiated by a French private pilot with firsthand operational experience. But expanding to other countries is definitely part of the long-term roadmap, for sure ![]()
Current status
This public beta marks an important milestone. You should be able to complete a full VFR flight, from first contact to shutdown, using only natural voice communication.
The following services are currently supported:
- ATIS
- Ground
- Tower
- AFIS
- FIS
However the system is not yet complete. The main limitations at this stage are:
- No active traffic injection: the controller takes into account AI traffic present in the simulator, but does not yet generate nor control traffic flows.
- Partial service coverage: some services are not yet supported, notably approach control and self-announcement in uncontrolled environments.
These capabilities are planned for future updates.
For this phase, the goals are:
- Confirm that the core VFR experience (pattern work, local flights, navigation) is robust and operationally credible.
- Gauge interest from the community for a VFR, regionally focused ATC system.
How It Works
AiTC runs on cloud-based AI infrastructure for speech recognition, semantic understanding, real-time response generation, speech synthesis, etc.
To manage costs associated with these services, the system uses a credit pack model. Each communication consumes credits based on length and complexity.
For this public beta:
- Registration is free.
- Every registered user receives a free pack of credits sufficient for a few flights.
- This allows thorough evaluation without any initial purchase.
The goal at this stage is not monetization, but feedback and iteration. Credit packs will become available if there is enough interest.
How to join the beta
The plan is to continue to expand service coverage, improve contextual understanding, and refine procedural realism. Community feedback will be a critical driver of these improvements.
If you are interested in realistic VFR flying within French airspaces, we invite you to join the beta, try the system, and share your impressions!
