Putting a Face on ASOBO

You may like to get a more Personal Perspective on the Programmers and Manager at ASOBO.

It’s one thing to type here in the forum, and complaining that “THEY” are not meeting your expectations, but you should remember they “THEY” are people, with lives and families, and like all of us, recently restricted on what they can do by the rapid spread of Covid-19.

Looks like the total company is only 140 employees, probably working on multiple projects, with a MSFS2020 team that is also probably significantly smaller than the former Microsoft FSX team.

There are only 24 hours in a day, and some of that has to be devoted to a personal life outside of work.

I think it is amazing what have manage to achieve so far, and look forward with great anticipation to what they will produce by the end of the year, and going on into 2021.

This ASOBO video, is publicly available on Youtube from a link on the ASOBO website, so I see no privacy issues etc, in posting it here.

Hopefully, putting a FACE to who many of us are criticizing will make us all appreciate that they are only Human, and probably working many more hours a week than most of us, in order to meet very demanding deadlines.

It’s a nice thought, but I’m afraid I don’t think it will make any difference to those that are demanding they be lined up in front of a firing squad because they’re triggered beyond human levels of moral outrage because an Airbus engine won’t start, or their potato running the sim has cooked itself to death and is now a bunch of fries.

I don’t think anybody is directly attacking the developers on an individual level, at least I certainly haven’t seen that. I’ve seen some frustration directed to the company as a whole though.

Having said that, putting faces to the names of developers doesn’t change the state of the simulator at release, which fell below my and a it would seem at least a few others expectations for a simulator product. It’s great they are working hard at it, but that is also what they’re employed to do. It’s a business after all.

With this latest patch we are now in “poor process” territory with the sensitivity control being broken. There should have been test coverage for that. All you’d need is to just check that UI screens render, and you would detect this issue. I can see not testing this on every build but you could pay an intern to do it on for releases, I’d think.

So, it’s good to know Asobo is a small team, but it doesn’t change my expectations so much that significant regressions in patches is acceptable.

I think I’m going to take the advice of another thread here and just not play for a while and come back when this all blows over. I’m going to think of this as an early access title for now. It has some great features and an exciting ambition, it just needs a little more time in the oven.

This, entirely. I stand in awe of the talent which has produced the sim we have, warts and all. It remains a staggering, if imperfect, achievement and I fully expect it to win awards (I think has already?). MSFS is a game-changer; a genuine leap forward for the genre - particularly on the world-building side of things. The ambition has been epic. Long may it continue.

There is no doubt wisdom to be found in this thread thus far.

However it is also close to being outside the scope of the forum, which exists to discuss the sim and not the developers.

Feedback on MSFS in existing threads is encouraged.
