So ive been doing some IFR flights wity the TBM 930 and during all of my ILS approaches the autopilot fails to follow the glide slope or desend in any way?
Is there any crucial step i may be missing? Should altittude mode be turned off after engaging the approach mode?
Yes, there probably is a crucial step being missed.
You need to have ILS freq dialed into NAV radio
Course and heading set to runway heading
You should be below the glideslope to intercept it in APP mode.
If I had to guess, I’d say it is the last point.

need to tune ILS in nav1/loc1, upon aprroach of ILS (lined up with), change from FMS/GPS to NAV1/LOC1 on garmin then hit AP-NAV to navigate the NAV1 and then AP-APR to follow the GS.
Works fine for me if above is followed.
Also learning the basics of IFR flight here, and kinda just learning as a go. Like most people are saying you may not be tuning the ILS frequency. If it is, all you have to do is switch to approach mode once you start lining up with the runway and it should pick up the glidescope, seemed pretty easy to me (when ATC and autopilot cooperate that is).
One thing to note is if you designate an ILS approach in the flight plan from the world map, you’re GPS should have the frequency tuned in already, just like how it loads the waypoints already.
Watch this part of P Gatcomb’s G1000 tutorial on how you activate it and what it should look like. (timestamp is 24:40 in case the embed doesn’t timestamp it)
If nothing looks wrong there watch from the beginning and make sure you’re not missing any setup steps (e.g. as others have mentioned the ILS frequency).
