Question- How does the sim decide what livery to use for in flight traffic?

Subject line says it all… Anybody know?

The only livery I’ve ever seen is United. otherwise they are all weird rainbow planes. :man_shrugging:

It doesn’t, other than the odd United I’ve seen here and there.

A couple of Q&A session ago, they did say they were working on getting licencing to use real liveries, but due to the terrible year airlines have had and their current issues, requests of “Hey, we want to licence
the likeliness of your planes and liveries in our video games” has pretty much fallen on deaf ears.

Well, except I have a buttload of liveries (most, but not all from clink’s megapack), and they show up all the time on aircraft on the ground. I imagine, but can’t say with certainty, that those are static and will never be going anywhere. But I sat off to the side today with FS running, and whenever I heard a plane coming in for a landing where I was, I clicked over to watch it come in, and like @Juiceman39 noted, they were ALL the odd rainbow looking things. I didn’t see United or anything else. And I am using real-time online traffic, so many of them are using actual callsigns, as opposed to “Generic this-that-or-the-other”.

So I am, once again, confused. But I kind of stay that way most of the time…

It will show liveries you have installed on parked ground traffic. That’s the static “set piece” planes parked at gates. Those will never move or go anywhere.

There is actually a whole section for traffic (AI) liveries in the Mega Pack. What I don’t get is the following: each livery has set the according ICAO airline code in the aircraft.cfg. Yet the sim seems choose the liveries randomly for both, AI traffic and live traffic.
I’m not sure what I’m missing here but from my understanding it should be stunningly easy to match live flight, say, DAL123 with a livery that is marked as “DAL” livery. Nevertheless I will likely encounter a JBU in Australia or FFT in Russia at some point and also a Lufthansa flight with a East China livery. Strange.

Not sure if this has to do with codeshares or something but I’m wondering.

Maybe this has already been described / explained somewhere.

I’ve seen many different company airlines, Hawaiian, westjet, United etc…

Use Generic ai is set to “off”.
Seems a backwards way of stating it?
Off means you see other liveries beside generic.

Still see some generic airlines.
No ai liveries installed and only 2 for the TBM.

I think they’re saying why don’t live flights have liveries… not the planes just at the airport.

I use Addons Linker (available here) to try to better manage what I’ve got and what’s active, and it doesn’t even want to put those traffic liveries into the Community folder to begin with. I have no idea why, or what the potential implications are, but that is my observation.

Maybe if I did it manually, who knows.

It really only becomes an issue (for me) when I see another plane taking off or landing, which really is pretty rare at least until they get their Flightaware issues fixed (which I hope will be soon, now that they’ve identified why it’s happening). I mean in the entire hour or so I just parked myself out of the way but had FS running in the background, only 5 or 6 planes landed, and I was at the active runway at LaGuardia ffs!!

I have seen liveries on landing and/or taking off aircraft planes, but I’m fairly certain those were actually multiplayer planes, and I’ve turned multiplayer off because I got sick of seeing planes spawn right in front of me as I was about to take off or land.

It would be nice if they would force you to spawn at a gate or parking spot to fix that. It could still cause problems if someone spawns into a gate or parking spot you’re already using or are about to pull into, but that’s less of an issue than just popping into existence on an active runway.

I know a lot of people like to spawn on the runway, either because they’re lazy or lack the skills to actually start the aircraft and taxi, but those are the kinds of folks I don’t want in multiplayer to begin with. Perhaps they could even have tiered multiplayer levels to keep everybody happy, one for gamers who want to spawn on the runway and repeatedly buzz the tower, and one for serious simmers who start in a parking spot (or gate), and either fly a point-A to point-B flight plan (or just VFR sight seeing), or at least do real world maneuvers like touch-n-goes or practice IFR approaches.

But then they’d have to change a lot of other things, I mean it’s not like JFK is going to let a 152 stay in the pattern for an hour, assuming they even bother going there in the first place considering the landing fees could fill it up with gas about 5 times (or more). But that’s not a disincentive in a simulated world.

Anyway, I’ve rambled on (as usual) for long enough, I would just like to see more AI traffic, and most if not all of it using realistic (if possible) liveries, or at least random ones if realistic is too much to ask.

On the aircraft file, aircraft.cfg there is a line on the bottom.

isAirTraffic = 0 ; Is the plane usable for air traffic

Put 1 in the 0.

isAirTraffic = 1 ; Is the plane usable for air traffic

You can use it in 4 different planes. The rest is luck.
Be aware that the planes you pic will appear in any airport in the world.
In my case I have TAP all over.

That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s certainly better than nothing, and I’m not about to edit the .cfg files of hundreds of different liveries manually, anyway. I may just do default airliners, because I rarely see GA traffic even if I’m at a GA only airport.

I may have to blow all my liveries away and start all over again, but I’m ok with that because there’s only a small handful I actually will be bummed about if I lost and can’t find again. And I can always just put those in a safe place while I delete everything else, most of mine come from Clink’s megapack anyway, so those are absurdly easy to replace.

Thanks for the tip!

Also take note that if you have multiplayer enabled you’ll be able to see other players’ liveries as long as you have that one installed on your end as well. So if you install the entire mega pack, you’ll see those liveries on any other player’s plane in the world, as long as you have both the plane model and livery yourself.

What is the issue they stated regarding FlightAware?

I remember one of them was in flight aircraft with no destination listed (like might be the case for many, if not most, VFR flights), and there were one or two others they said that I don’t remember.

This whole conversation also has me wondering how they handle FlightAware traffic that is not using an FS2020 aircraft. Do they just turn all 737 flights into an Airbus 320 (at least for appearances), or are they just ignored and don’t exist at all in the live traffic FS2020 universe? I have zero idea what the answer to that question is, in fact I think I might even make a separate post about that very issue.

If I remember, anyway, as I’m gonna be stepping away from the board for a bit to do some actual simming instead of just talking about it. If you’re feeling froggy, feel free to post it yourself, just do me a favor and throw me some props if you do, please… :slightly_smiling_face:

I am so sorry if my limited available flight time requires me to load up the sim, load up my start location and get into the air. It pains me to no end that I don’t have the extra 30 min to waste going through my checklists, getting my clearances and then having to hold on the taxiway because some ■■■■■ parked his pickup at the intersection. After spending hours doing that in real life, now I just want to go flying for an hour before supper. I guess I just don’t have the skill to understand the menu system well enough to turn you off. Or maybe I am just too lazy when I get home from work to want to.

I can guarantee that those insensitive users you are complaining about ARE in fact AI, if you have in fact turned OFF multiplayer. With multiplayer off you can still have all the real world traffic and AI if you want. Just NO other sim users daring to use the same airport that you reserved.

An open, multiuser world is NOT the place to go if you want full immersion. That location is tiered to allow everyone to enjoy the simulator together even if there are safeguards in place to prevent users from interfering with another pilots flight, except maybe as a visual distraction. For those rare occasions that I don’t want any distraction from a full immersion flight, it is sure nice to know I can always enjoy the real world traffic and turn OFF the multiplayer annoyances.

OK, so I just parked myself at Newark for about a half an hour and just watched. I saw an assload of planes stacked up for takeoff, but only one actually took off (and he got yelled at), they eventually just vanished and the rest of the line moved up. A few asked to takeoff, but were always told to hold short as there was traffic on the runway, but I didn’t see it.

All of them except United had that odd rainbow livery going on. That thing is god awful…

I thought I changed an American Airlines livery to be usable for traffic, but didn’t see any of those. Then again, I didn’t see anything labeled AAL, either. I don’t usually have those labels turned on, but I did for this little experiment.

Considering it’s Newark, I’m not surprised, but I didn’t see a single GA plane (except me) at all. Also, curiously, I didn’t see even one aircraft in the air, or coming in for a landing, and trust me, at this time of day, they’re lined up like a string of pearls.
