On top of a small cloud layer with Mt. Baker in the distance. Departed Boeing Field, Seattle (KBFI) on the way to Stehekin State Airport (S69) on Lake Chelan, WA.

Whidbey Island and the Olympic Range in the background.

Mt. Vernon and Sedro Woolley, WA.

Mt. Baker and the Skagit Valley.

Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan.

Following the Skagit River. Glacier Peak, dead ahead.

Better get on up to 9,500’ to clear the North Cascades! The triangular peak in the middle is the aptly named Mt. Formidable.

Not for nothing are the North Cascades known as the American Alps. This is the most rugged terrain in the lower 48 states.

Surfing some pretty good mountain wave action down here…It is just now occurring to me that the airfield might still be buried in snow!

Flying over Cascade Pass, the Stehekin River Valley is dead ahead.

Stehekin is coming into view, and I’m pretty sure we are going to need a Plan B. Good thing we have lots of gas! I think we will just continue east to Omak.

Lake Chelan. The South end is unthawed, the North end, not so much.

Ice floes in the thaw zone as we flee the mountains.

Big time updraft as we clear the ridge!

Truly magnificent country…

Dumping altitude in a hurry as we catch a downdraft.

Suddenly it is green.

I’m pretty sure that is Twisp (I forgot to note where I was when I took the picture).

I was thinking we were done with done with the mountains; I totally forgot about this section!

One last ridge to clear…

One more ridge to clear…This time I mean it!

Airport in sight.

Short final.

Touching down RWY 17 KOMK, right in the zone, just a hair off center.

Good to stretch the legs!

Tied down and ready for bed in Omak, WA. The Okanagan is a truly beautiful area. It extends from North Central Washington across the border into Canada.
