Real world procedures?

Doesn’t hurt. We generally would file IFR heading out. It’s easy enough to cancel IFR once in uncontrolled airspace. Most areas where I was flying we didn’t have radar coverage at VFR altitudes anyway.

Just make sure you close your flight plan on long final, before losing radio contact, or expect SAR to be circling your campsite in a few hours. :grin:
