Realtime Lightning on World Map?

I searched for this but did see anything so thought I’d post. I loaded up the sim this morning and on the World Map page, I noticed little “pops” of light in the dark parts of the globe that appears to be indicating lightning? This affect seems to work with the World Map set to Clouds. Pretty cool if so. I recall an app for the iPhone that shows lightning via a similar method. It is data available globally so makes sense they could inject it somehow.

So after spotting one of these flashes, I was able to load up at an airport nearby and my weather was stormy with lightning. Cool. No Idea if this is new but I don’t recall seeing this before. I’m on the latest version 1.11.6.0.

It may be simulated according to the area where a thunderstorm is located, but I doubt that it’s accurate to location of each strike at that time.

Lightning data is usually a subscription service and fairly costly. At least in the US.

Windy(dot)com has what appears to be something close to real-time lightning on their maps.

Some of the phone-based weather apps tap this data as well to show lightning strikes that persist on a map. They use this to trigger location based storm alerts. I don’t think the strikes are of course “the” location, but as stated, a general representation of where storms are located.
