I really like OnAir as an alternative to FSEconomy. Its not free but that means they keep adding features, great interface and a growing community.
I really like FSEconomy but stop playing for a while as is stuck and no further features are added. Interface is from the 90s and they dont have a development plan.
Tim Arnotās Plan-G flight planner is now 64 bit and builds a MSFS specific database so has all those extra airfields. Still in Alpha but open to one and all, forum membership required (free). http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=13.0
Oh this looks like a Navigraph competitor! Any thoughts on what may set it apart? At first glance it seems to be a bit cheaper then Navigraph (including the extra $75/year they charge for geo-referenced charts).
From compiling all these different types of apps, Iāve noticed one similar trend. Europe data always comes at a premium. Iām guessing this is because in the US, the FAA has made the charts widely available for free. I think this dashes my hopes for finding a completely free app with worldwide data and geo-referenced charts.
Iāll stick to flying in NA with FltPlan Go in that regard.

I can absolutely agree with you. And since I got more CTDs with the new patch, the good thing with OnAir is, you can continue the flight, where you left of. That plus the good working UI and better feedback really got me hooked, despite the hefty price!
Indeed true, but you know for about 3$ a month, itās not bad. Even though itās more towards people paying the full year (as with most subs these days). Still a good thing. My free trial is about to expire, but Iāll be purchasing it.
Thanks for that update! I have xMapsy, too but stopped using it because of the frequent pauses it was causing in the sim. I totally forgot this update was to address SimConnect issues. Will have to try again!
With over 35 years flight simming experience, I have tried a wide range of flight planning / moving map tools, particularly in the last 10+ years, including most of those listed. I have yet to find a payware tool that represents real value for money and worthy of the price charged.
Plan-G, developed by Tim Arnot, is a freeware tool which has seen constant development and improvement for over 11 years and I keep going back to it for its sheer simplicity of use, depth of functionality, and detail. The uncluttered interface makes it easier and more pleasant to use than Little NavMap, providing a much better ability to route plan, view map detail, and track flights. With the ability to build a database specific to MSFS and your add-on scenery, it provides all the airport detail, including taxiways, ramp layout, gates / parking spots, and refueling points, and surpasses the MSFS default World Map for flight planning, by saving the flight plan in Plan-G and simply opening it in MSFS.
Currently available from the Plan-G Forums in a 64bit alpha version for MSFS (log-in required), it continues to improve and add features with every version release.
When @downmutley suggested this app (about 10 posts up) I wrote it off because it seemed unusual to gate off a software download to a forum login. However your description of the app convinced me to check it out. So I registered for the forum and downloaded the tool. Reading the Read Me.txt I see the following:
Therefore for now Iām going to go ahead and refrain from adding it to the main list. Once itās a bit more public Iāll happily add it to the list!
Your objective of this thread was to identify a list of the best companion apps to use alongside MSFS 2020. Like all other apps listed, Plan-G has existed in stable versions for over 11 years.
Less than three weeks after the public release of MSFS 2020, I chose to highlight the version of Plan-G which, whilst currently an alpha version, has been specifically developed to maximise the 64bit benefits of MSFS. I have been using this version extensively and successfully and with very few minor issues and on the basis of the supposed objective of this thread, chose to offer it as a suggestion for the benefit of the flight sim community.
On the basis of a cursory read of a text file, and without any, or extremely limited experience with the use of Plan-G, at best, you choose to exclude it from your list, thereby doing a disservice to the flight sim community you purport to assist through this thread.
Maybe you need to redefine the purpose of your thread or explain that you hold the right to veto and exclude valid suggestions simply because you personally disagree with it.
I was afraid of this being the perception, but as I quoted from the readme, it seems the developer himself doesnāt want it being publicly available yet. I understand this software has existed for several years, but the current publicly available version of the product isnāt compatible with MSFS2020, right? Unless Iāve misunderstood, please let me know.
It seems you are very passionate about this project and I love seeing that. As I said, your pitch alone motivated me to register an account on the forum to download the alpha build. But I donāt think I should be adding G-Plan to this compilation just yet, simply due to the wishes of the developer.
If, however, we get explicit consent from him, then I have no problem adding it to the list!
If indeed this is written in the official readme fileā¦
⦠not including the software in this list is the only right thing to do unless the author of the software gives explicit permission or makes his software public.
I applaud @GamerKingFaiz for not only respecting, but actively looking into potential conflicts of interest here. Too few people care about stuff like that.
@GamerKingFaiz Iāve been made aware of this thread. Yes that statement does appear in the readme. The no talk/distribute clause was put there while the alpha was private and MSFS still under NDA. It didnāt get amended when it went public and MSFS was released, which was an oversight on my part. It will be rectified in the next build. Apologies for any confusion that may have been caused. Permission is most definitely granted to include Plan-G in any listing of companion apps. A link to the main download page is below.
Plan-G is a free VFR flight planner for MSFS series, P3D and X-Plane. Itās been available since 2008, from http://www.tasoftware.co.uk The current release (3.2.2) gives access to MSFS through SimConnect or FSUIPC - as do LNM and others. There is also a public alpha of v4 available through the forum. v4 is a major overhaul to the program, the main benefit to MSFS users is that it can read MSFS nav data, whereas the current release version relies on having data available from another sim.
Thank you for taking the time and clarifying this Tim! I appreciate the description and have now added Plan-G to the original post!
EDIT: I was curious does Plan-G overlay geo-referenced charts onto the map? The only freeware that Iāve seen do this so far is FltPlan Go. Example screenshots below:
