Reinstalling due to update

Hi team,

I am reinstalling the sim as it longer works since the last update.
I can only install it via the Xbox app now, is that normal?
Iv attempted to reinstall it and it crashes at 67%. As of now I have no sim on my pc…

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I also have had to do a “reinstall” after the update. I had installed the beta and it was working. When the official update was released, I opted out of the insider flight beta as instructed. For the days afterwards MSFS was working and I thought all was well. Then last night it indicated a mandatory update of 113gb was needed but there was not enough room on the drive. I made room and the update started. So it should be done in 2-4 hrs.(estimated total 20 + hrs).
There was enough room for the beta but not the official update? Why, after I made room on the drive, was a complete download necessary? Doesn’t it recognize that all but the most recent updated or new files were there? The location did not change.

Yeah, I broke mine attempting this, too. I contacted MSFS Support, and they told me to contact MS Store Support. I contacted them, and they told me to contact XBOX Support. XBOX support told me to contact MSFS Support, or to uninstall the re-install the game. I decided to go with the latter, and now I cannot re-install the game. It crashed at 0% and gives me error 0x80070424. I completely unable to access MSFS in any way, so I also have no simulator on my machine. Latest info is that I will likely have to totally re-install Windows.

I have exactly the same problem. When I start I get “Game Update Available” dialog and when I then update using the Microsoft Store, same exact thing still happens.

Thanks for the reply…I sincerely hope this isn’t the case… I’m stepping away from it for a few days but I appreciate your input.
Il update you here if I manage to figure it out!

No if redownloaded as it states on the beta build channels

If installed on default path, sometimes a full reinstall will take place, for future reference if yoyuparticipate in preview builds, make a copy of the official folder and rename the community folder, then yoy can hot swap them so you don’t need to download the entire sim again

Or change the directory before taking part in the beta

I’m still working through everything to see if it worked, but I may have just solved it. Open Powershell as Administrator, and enter this string:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

That should reset everything and let you install.

I use Macrium Reflect to create a Disk Image and a MSFS Folder Image and update every week.
.
If I need to restore, I can restore my MSFS folders in about 13 minutes or the entire disk in about 26 minutes.

Beats having to “Reinstall” MSFS2020 from the internet.

Interesting. Any input on the best way to implement this in a system with multiple drives? I’ve never used Disk/Folder images before, don’t want to break anything or cannibalize my own hard-drive space.

I also have multiple drives. I make a disk image backup of the drives whenever I feel it is appropriate, however, macrium reflect offers multiple methods to automate and schedule Full, Incremental or Differential backups. Backups can be created several ways. I use the Full Disk and Folder methods. To me, backups are essential. Going without a rock solid backup is risking everything on your machine.

But where do you keep the backup? If it’s on your machine, isn’t it redundant since losing the machine kills the backup, too?

I had this happen as well where the game wouldn’t launch, the Xbox app and Microsoft store couldn’t find the game. I was about to reinstall the sim for the first time ever when I decided to first give it a good ole computer restart.

Sure enough that did the trick for me. The sim loaded up fine after that and was able to update.

I have an external sata docking station that is connected via eSata and power off and disconnect the backup drive when the backup is finished. I also have an internal hot bay that can be used to insert and remove a HDD or SSD for backup storage. You can also use a USB connected drive to store your backups, however, the USB method may be the slowest.
.
So, yes you are correct. Any backup storage device needs to be powered off and disconnected after the backup has completed. I use a rotating schedule for my backups consisting of 2 sata connected HHD’s so that I can alternate drives every other week and they are removed from the computer after each backup has completed.
