Leroy Grumman came up with the design/mechanics of the wing fold mechanism for his Wildcats using an eraser and a couple of paper clips…used subsequently on all Grumman aircraft during the campaign and
almost doubling the number of attack aircraft the US carrier fleet could take to war…

+1 for Milviz Hellcat

Is that a radial engine?

The engine is the same as the Corsair. All of the fixes/mods/additions to the Corsair will be added to the Hellcat.

The Corsair will be sent to MS for inclusion on the marketplace as soon as we get the SP out the door… however, it needs to be pointed out that the one on sale there will not have any of the weapons tech (or, for future planes) funky liveries…

Sorry, not to get too far off topic from the Corsair. With the news of the Hellcat, what do you think of the possibility of licensing the sounds, art and whatever else to get this bird in?:

From the site: The Museum’s Zero is the only fully authentic flyable example in the world.

Then we can have the best pacific theater ever. Corsair, Hellcat and Zero together.

I’ve been asked about this before… it’s under consideration but, given the amount of other aircraft (and contractual obligations) it wouldn’t happen any time soon…

Totally understand. I wouldn’t expect anything less than a couple years of development once decided on. Thanks for being open about it.

Same engine as the DC-6 upcoming from PMDG

actually Gunny - the Wildcat was one of only a few types that were in service from before the war started until after it ended…so while the Hellcat was definitely an upgrade, it did not replace the Wildcat - it augmented them. The article I linked above includes this information…

The Republic P-47 also used the Wasp 2800 and was in service for the duration in the other theater

Don’t want to get off-topic too much, but that’s not entirely correct. The Wildcat was replaced as the primary fighter. In 1943 they were moved to the smaller escort carriers for anti-submarine operations and ground close air support. The USN/USMC switched to Hellcats and Corsairs for air combat. Two vicious birds, though I’ve been told that the Hellcat was friendlier to pilots.

hellcat is p-47 without turbocharger steroid
your cap. lol

Good point, I saw this note yesterday when looking the Hellcat up:

Grumman had developed an improved Hellcat, the F6F-5, which utilized a redesigned engine cowl, new ailerons, a strengthened tail, and a water-injection system for the engine, which added 10% to the takeoff performance and increased its armament-carrying capabilities. The F6F-5 was first flown on 4 April 1944, and production continued through November 1945.

This isn’t the version that made all those kills in the Pacific. MilViz is putting a lot of effort into the Corsair supercharger, maybe this will be the version of Hellcat we get. Time will tell.
