That surprised me. Where did you read that? I just checked the folder on my disk (see below) and yes it’s pretty big (no idea why - although there are 2 separate planes in the package) but “only” 5.26gb on disk actually. If that helps!
By the way, I have a ton of planes and all my liveries on a very slow removable SDXC card on my machine (actually the card is decent but my machine is limited to 30mb/s read/write speed on it) and it causes no problems. Load times may be a touch slower but it’s hardly noticable and only happens when you choose that plane and/or a livery. This could be an option for you? I just put (or move) the planes I rarely fly on to that SD Card, but still link them in Addons Linker so they show up in the game if I want to use them. I have an extra 1tb sotrage that way
EDIT: I see on the fs.to page where I bought it, it says 5.05gb install size (3gb download) so assume you mean on the marketplace. I doubt it uses that extra space. They probably mean it needs enough room to get the download AND install it, then it will remove the 3gb part after it’s installed. You can use PayPal on the fs.to site to be safe lol
Just select one of the “soaring” presets. I have been using “summer soaring” and “ridge soaring”. When I begin my flight, I note the wind direction on the ground. I fly toward the ridges that look like they’ll get the best updraft, and that generally works pretty well. I pick a line and see how much lift there is, and usually I’m able to gain 1-2 KM fairly easily by making multiple passes. Avoid flying over the ridge, as there will be turbulence and high sink on the leeward side of the ridge. Also, always turn out, never toward the mountain. I have gotten to the point where I could literally stay aloft indefinitely. Plus, the weather presets provide a uniform experience. My favorite locations include Reno NV, Pray MT, Ulrichen Switzerland, all over Southern California. Hope that helps.
I works fine with live weather. It’s just that the thermals are a bit small and limited in the maximum amount of vertical speed you’ll get. I’ve done several 2H+ flights in the Discus on live weather though, and it will only get better with the 40th anniversary edition coming up later this year.
Did my very first proper soaring flight ever today … over an hour in the air living off ridge lift. Cross country from Mount Cook (NZMC) over the glacier, then to the east over the lakes, north past the mountains, then west towards the Hokitika airport (NZHO). But then I decided to give myself a challenge and diverted to the Franz Josef aerodrome (NZFJ) further west.
Unfortunately there weren’t any good updrafts and I kept losing altitude. When I flew through a valley looking for lift I was met by downdrafts instead … I followed the ridges in a gentle turn north and was almost skimming the tree tops when I finally hit a strong updraft and spiraled my way up to a decent altitude again. That gave me everyhing I needed to make the airport. Hitting that updraft at the last minute was quite exhilarating!
So there is a parachute? That´s why there are never any accidents with deaths related to sailplanes!
I wonder why no other GA pilot ever had the idea of taking a parachute with him! All the small Piper and Cessna GA accidents would have a death toll of zero when having parachutes on board.
Well, it’s one thing to abandon a light glider as opposed to a heavy motorized aircraft with a lot of flammable fuel on board. You don’t want to let the go down uncontrolled (looking at you, a certain YouTuber). Also, most GA fatalities happen with controlled flight into terrain in zero visibilty or in stall/spin crashes right before touchdown or right after take-off. In both cases a parachute is as useless a snorkel in the Sahara.
