[RELEASED] F4F-4 Wildcat | Got Friends

I feel a Flow Pro Widget request coming on…

I haven’t yet. I’m waiting for rhe Supercarrier WW2 addon.

So I’ve noticed a couple of bugs so far.

  • The first one isn’t GotFriends’ issue at all, but it’s entirely MS’s: That INFURIATING WHITE DOT OF ANNOYANCE prevents me from clicking and holding the starter to actually start the aircraft. I have to map a button to do that.

  • I can’t open the canopy. I can scroll the crank; it cranks and the sound changes to clearly indicate that the canopy is open, but the visual model shows the canopy shut.

  • My pilot randomly disappears in external view. I only found out about the seat clickzone by reading this thread, but the pilot still randomly disappears.

  • Interior glass reflections could use a little toning down (not a bug)

  • Electrics conk out when the engine is at idle immediately after landing. If I bring the throttle up to ~25%, the lights all pop back on and the radio works again. Yes my battery and generator switches are on.

Thank you Got Friends!! I’ve been flying it the past few days and I’m thoroughly impressed. I was wondering how it would compare to Flying Iron’s F6F Hellcat and it very much feels cohesive and on par with their level of detail and immersion.

Feedback I can give is that, like others have said, it takes a lot of up trim and back pressure to not nosedrive on landing. I think the interior glass reflections can be toned down and the exterior glass seems way too tinted. When spawning on the runway I’ve found that the engine is sometimes overprimed and quits. I turned off the realistic priming simulation which fixes that. Also, could the wings stay folded while taxiing? (pitot tube hits the ground when folding) Lastly, can the running lights (tail and wings) not be turned off? Thanks again for this amazing product! Well worth the money.

Apparently will be fixed in tomorrow’s Sim Update!

Great feedback and we will definitely look into those for the next update.

As for some of them, make sure your have unbound spoilers from your control settings. This is used for multiplayer canopy visuals. Just like the flight manual states for beacon lights, you also need to unbound spoilers. This is something I forgot to put in the flight manual and it will be in the next iteration. Pilot model is using the F/A-18 pilot for now. If you don’t have TopGun installed or you removed the F/A-18, this might be the cause of the missing pilot. We are aware and have changed the default pilot for the next update to Asobo’s default. That way it doesn’t require an additional TopGun download.

@Propblur Thank you for the feeback as well.

We are looking into the prime issue on the runway and are aware of it. As for folding wings, those were done manually in real life. So our implementation takes that into account but also limits the user in some respect. For example, if you are going over 20 knots ground speed, your wings will automatically unfold. So technically yes, you can taxi with wings folded if you are under 20 knots. The tail and wing running lights are tied directory to the main bus. There is no turning them on or off. That said, there is a dim/bright switch that will adjust their intensity for visibility in wartime.

Thanks everyone. All comments are noted.

Can I get some pointers on landing the Wildcat on a runway/grass please?

As soon as I get flaps and gear out, I drop like a brick. Normal approach in other planes gets me too low, such that I have to jam the throttle forward and can’t see the runway.

I did read that since she was designed for carriers, you can really plunk her down on the ground. Should I be using a steeper glidepath?

Going to read the manual and see if I missed anything. Thanks!

For those having trouble landing, It’s my understanding that Navy pilots laugh at those people who think you need to flare to land.

Navy aircraft are meant to be plopped. Right there. Nice and hard. On that little wire. Drive that thing right to the deck.

I love these guys to no end. But it’s not really the bird that excites me AT ALL. I was never into warbirds, but I am starting to get into them. At the same time, it’s just the semi-modern ones. So… Sorry, guys. Just not my bag at all, and that’s OK.

So why post? I don’t pop into seafood topics on cooking forums and point out that I’m sure the recipes are delicious, but I hate the taste of fish, so I won’t be making any of them.

But seriously… I’ve seen you enjoy historic aircraft, and this is detailed historic aircraft. Just because it was designed for combat doesn’t mean it’s not as much fun to fly as an air racer!

I greatly admire the GF Devs attitude,

You purchased it, they are now your files, look at them , delete change them as you want.

Did someone tell the flight deck crew that planes should be PLANTED down on the flight deck, and they misunderstood, and PLANTED Trees instead ?

Clearly, that’s camouflage.

I just want to clarify that, just because naval aircraft are/were designed to take the stresses of a carrier landing, it doesn’t mean in any way that they couldn’t (or shouldn’t) be capable and of being three pointed or wheel landed smoothly.

The only carrier planes I flew were jets and those were meant to be flown under power in a constant rate of descent to touchdown.

They were perfectly capable of being flared however; though we generally took a certain sick pride in not doing it!

Also, and IIRC, because of the straight deck, those WWII props were flown by cutting the throttle based on the LSO’s command and “setting” the hook like a short field landing in a tail dragger. So a little different than they do it now.

More generally, running out of nose authority is an issue that seems to happen often in MSFS aircraft…and other sims.

And, while most definitions of stall include running out of backstick as one of the criteria, I’m a bit dubious that this is how many of these aircraft actually stalled in real life (though it’s possible some did).

This isn’t so much a “here or there” statement except to say that,

Just because the Wildcat was built for carrier ops, IMO, the aircraft should be capable of a full stall three point landing at its published approach speeds.

Since this is something that transcends the Wildcat, transcends MSFS even, this may be one of those, “hard to fine tune” issues, but I think we need to be careful of normalizing it. :slightly_smiling_face:

No, this wasn’t quite directed towards any one comment.

Just more as a general discussion around the Wildcat, MSFS, and sims in general. :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit: I’d pay good money if, when I replied to someone, it stayed replied to! :joy:

Right!?!.. I hate that feature of this board…
I don’t care that my comment is next. Make it a reply to when I reply too.

Just be thankful that you replay does not get deleted (Flagged by “who knows who” )

At least one always seems to get a quick reply to any questions asked of the Got Friends Devs .

Their feedback here, and Tech Support on their Discord is very professional and attentive.

Because this Forum is made for conversation and expressing your opinion about things should be a welcome thing. I love Grravel and Jonx… I wish them nothing less than an absolute blowout, but I am out on this. And that’s my opinion. I have enjoyed historic aircraft up to a point. It’s always a debate - the lack of modern nav systems has been a pain, but… Flying Iron Spitfire, the MilViz Corsair, etc are amazing. I own them, but I don’t fly them often. I am at a point where I am only investing in things I can see myself flying. BUT! And it’s a huge one… I just wanted to express my appreciation for what they do, even though their recent product isn’t my bag, per se. I just wanted to say that while I won’t be buying, I think I can rely on my instincts because of knowing their work that it’s a great aircraft. Just not for me. I am also a devout snob with no filter, so there’s THAT. Mostly, I just want the people who are into this to buy their aircraft, even though it’s not my bag.

Carrier landings are a lot easier in this bird than either the Corsair or the hellcat. Heck even easier than any of the jets IMHO.

Loving this bird. Thanks Got Friends for spending the time to make this amazing!!! The only issue I have now is whether to fly the Comanche or the Wildcat on VatSim.:heart::heart:
