Reminder Mc Carran INTL is now Harry Reid International Airport

Just a reminder KLAS Mc Carran International Airport was changed to Harry Reid International Airport in 2021

I don’t care I’m still requesting IFR clearance to Las Vegas. They know where I’m going

What are they naming a huge airport like that after a British actor from Eastenders (soap opera tv show)?

I know
I wonder how many non-famous people with that name have flown through that airport though. Must be hundreds!

Imagine on vatsim - Request IFR clearance to Harry Reid airport

Actually I once had a controller continuously correct people. He’s just like “and once again it’s Harry Reid” and he sounded so dead inside

He didn’t refer to it as KLAS?

No people who were flying to Las Vegas (KLAS) were saying “requesting IFR clearance to Las Vegas” or saying McCarren and the controller was correcting people in saying “it changed a couple years ago to Harry Reid International”

It was quite funny hearing the relief in this man’s voice when one person correctly said Harry Reid lmao

Which one? There are two airports in that city - three if you count Nellis AFB!

Probably why the controller was getting frustrated :upside_down_face:

Actually 3 civilians  KHND (Henderson), KVGT (North Las Vegas) and Harry Reid

Good point, but due to this one being an “executive” airport, I would suspect that pilots heading there would know to use the Henderson name instead of just trying to say they’re going to Las Vegas.

Personal Comments and Observations

You can edit the ATC locpak file to see what the ICAO code is set to for alternative airport names. This option is not available to all airports, only to ICAOs already present in the file. I didn’t code it, I just learned how it can be tweaked.

Note that TTS may not get pronunciation right just using the nominal name spelling. A bit of phonetical adjustment may be required to have certain names “sound” correctly when spoken by the Windows voice system or Azure.
