I’m finding that the “replay” functions are not true replay. People who were walking around the airport when the original is recorded are no longer there (no matter which track). Also, dust that is kicked up when taxiing off the runway is no longer there on replay. So using replay to create videos is not true to the original flight. I understand that replay is currently in “development mode”. But I would like to see this issue corrected in the official replay version so that videos are more interesting/true. Do I need to report this via Zendesk?
I suspect this is how all replay capabiliies will work and isn’t something that can/will be improved. The challenge is that the sim is “always live” and so the replay (at least currently) is essentially “injecting” your aircraft position, speed, angle, control surfaces etc into the sim. I think it is only variables relating to that that are stored/recorded and nothing else - not sure anything alse could be recorded (such as ground crew wandering about).
The advantage of this approach is that it means all the existing camera angles etc can be used and you can essentially watch your replay from wherever you like.
Note that live traffic and weather (for example) are also not recorded and will reflect the traffic and weather at the time of the replay. This means that you could record a flight in calm conditions, and replay the flight in a storm and the plane will stick to the flight path etc of calm conditions.
As I say, given the always live nature of the sim, I doubt there is anything that can/will be done about this - and some might argue they don’t want that to change as it gives greater flexibility.
The mods/add-ons available for replay (e.g. FlightControlRecorder) use this same technique/approach.
I use SkyDolly, but I believe my experience is like yours. When I play the recording back, land, and taxi to my parking spot, sometimes a plane will be in the same parking spot that I just parked in. My guess is that when you play the recording back, you’re getting current conditions as opposed to what it was when the recording was made. I can only assume that’s because it would be nearly impossible to “record” every single plane, car, and person movement for later playback.
Edit: Gordon said it much better!
Quite simply it’s not a recording and all replay tools work like this. As for the dust, wake etc. I think Asobo have earmarked it for future attention but it’s probably low priority.
I understand that replay is not a recording, it’s instructions to the sim. It works like a music MIDI file, it tells the player what to play, it’s not actual music. But given that, it would seem like dust from the wheels would be recreated just as on the first time thru. For example, if while I am “recording” a replay file I edge off the runway into the grass, dust comes up. It creates wonderful realism that I would like to see in my videos. But when I run the replay file to create a screen recording, the dust is not created. The same thing for a tight turn skid. Also, I understand the vehicles and people moving around when I am doing an initial creation of a replay file are “random” and their activity is not recorded in the replay file. But when I play the replay file to do a screen record, the sim should randomly create stuff just like it did the first time (even if not the same stuff in the same plane). But the sim does not generate vehicles and people when doing a replay. I think this is something Asobo could correct. I don’t think the “generate artifacts” code is being executed on a replay. But how do we bring it to their attention other than a Zendesk report (which is never acknowledged or reported on).
I always get an email acknowledgement - and if it’s on the wishlist and gets enough votes it gets reported back to us. With a couple of million users it is very unlikely you will get personal service over such trivial matters especially as the replay function is just a beta, I’m sure they have far bigger issues to worry about with the sim itself.
That’s correct. You do get an email acknowledgement of the Zendesk submission. After that it seems to go into a black hole with no way to track or know what happened to what you submitted.
Also, I was assuming that since Replay is in development mode, Asobo would appreciate any feedback on making the product better. I was just hoping there was a way to have Asobo put this on their To-Do list for 2024.
