I don’t recollect FSX ever having a full-fledged replay option. FSX did have a few seconds of continuous recording (was it 90secs?).
XPlane on the other hand can replay the entire flight from start to finish, if you wanted it to – forget that it could end up setting your computer on fire . So, I think you might be missing the replay option that XPlane had. And, I don’t blame you – me too!
Hy has released a great RECORD / REPLAY tool for MSFS.
It can run on the same PC as MSFS, and the playback is ULTRA SMOOTH, even on low end machines.
The Recording are also easily readable and processed by any addition program, and hold most of the Planes “Variables” …
Many thank Hy … yet another great “well written” ADDON by you. Much appreciated.

Totally agree with you, N6722C!
I am blown-away by the simplicity and quality of this little flight replay recorder.
It’s not perfect, but it’s at least equal to, if not better than the FSX version.
It certainly fills the void for me, at least until MS/Asobo release their version.
Frankly, I think that MS/Asobo should consider contacting this guy “Hy” (nguyenguyhy) on github to discuss working with them on their replay project. He obviously has the skills!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Hy!
I’ve done a full review of FCR here - working really well for me and the dev kindly let me try a preview build of the forthcoming March update - awesome smooth playback
This is all very nice, and many thanks to Fabio Merlo, but why has somebody from the community
to do that, when 14 years ago, FSX had this implemented in the core itself?
The same goes for a missing fly-by view and airport tower view.
All of these were present in FSX, I insist, 14 YEARS AGO!
And indeed, if I remember correctly, also in previous versions of MSFS…
Maybe because MSFS is completely different and based on modern technology. Just a thought.
Honestly, FSX replay was terrible. If they copy that, it would be another bad feature. You will still need community to build another one.
For me no it wasn’t. It was a great replay system for its age. I never had any issue with it, I am still wondering why MSFS was allowed to release without a replay function. Standard menu item on any simulation game for the last 25 years but somehow Microsoft decided it was not a necessary thing at launch, 6 months on they obviously still see no reason to have a replay function.
The half-baked replay function in FSX is pretty much doable in an afternoon (which I did and released for free here [RELEASE] Flight Recorder - Free replay tool).
FSX replay function is bad considering the huge extensibility of the platform (even from FSX era). It was built with a very closed mind and lack of consideration for 3rd party aircraft, so although I also long for a replay function, I would rather wait for a proper design that actually work with 3rd party aircraft. A proper design, unfortunately, will never come if Asobo rushes a release before complex 3rd party aircraft.
Of course Asobo can also release a half-bake feature now and change it completely later, but for me it’s a waste of effort in development and support (and all the toxicity around here when anything doesn’t work as expected) for a mid-size studio.
Even if the replay function of FSX was bad, which it wasn’t, what about the
fly-by view and airport tower view?
All of these were present in FSX 14 YEARS AGO!
Flightcontrolreplay is about 10 years that give fsx compatibility . In this 10 years I made a lot of adjustment to the way I record and replay and it works well. You are right about fsx replay … was indecent
It was all I want. I would be satisfied if the same was in this.
I am missing an achtive replay function. It would be nice to save a flight an have the possibility to replay it and chose different camera positions as you can do that in xplane.
Yes and it’s extraordinary that this wasn’t incorporated as part of the built-in functionality. It’s so basic that it’s mind-boggling it was not there on launch.
Have you tried Flight Recorder on flightsim.to?
Yes I use Flight Recorder and it is really good, it works well and easy to use.
True, but remember that XP11 on release didn’t have a working moving map. A tad more basic than a replay function.
Its likely we won’t see a MSFS native version of this now, if pressure is taken off of Asobo by third parties.
I am going to be a pretty upset teddy bear if Asobo start removing future features based on third parties, offering payware software for purchase, and uses the excuse it is taking pressure off us. Third Party Development is supposed to supplement the Sim, and not replace promised features surely?
That depends on whether they “promised” perhaps? If it’s on the list of things they have accepted they will look into, as part of a future update, then that would count. If its merely on a wishlist of things the community voted on, I don’t think it does.
