Returning to Flight Simulation: VR in 2024

It’s still on flea bay and Vinted. Free to good home

PS - and I thought it was me you were worried about

PS - am on VD (40Fps) ultra settings

If you want truly clear(er) graphics in VR, don’t use a Q3. Try Crystal light or a used Aero. But unfortunately that would also require a GPU upgrade to get any real joy out of them.

VR has to make 2 frames for every frame to get what they call stereo overlap. That’s how they make it look 3d by taking a frame and slightly altering it to give each eye depth and realism. Your choices with the 2070 card are limited. Unless you plan on upgrading the GPU I suggest picking up a HP G2. You could probably get a used one for $150 to $200. That was my first headset and it’s really good for the money. The sweet spot is small but you learn to turn your head instead of your eyes to look around. It has a pixel rate of 2160x2160 which is not bad for that price.

Be careful as for G2 you will either need Windows 10 or block updates to Windows 11, the recent update to Windows 11 removed completely the Windows Mixed Reality feature, which bricked all WMR-based headsets, including G2.

While I loved the G2 (for its time) and agree it’s great for the money, for someone coming from a Q3 I think the downgrade in e2e clarity would be hard to take. Plus the whole “you must stay on Windows 10 and not update it” thing.

My father just picked up a Crystal Light, The first one he purchased had a bad right lense with some very bad chromatic arbaration, and a fuzzy look. We exchanged that yesterday and the new one has no issues.

All I can say about it is WOW! Sooo ■■■■ crisp and clear! Especially compared to the Quest 2 and 3. As well as being buttery smooth. Night and day difference. The wider field of view would take some getting used to. I think I am going ot have to start trying to convince my wife that I NEED one lol.

He is also running an RTX4080 similar to myself, the only difference between his machine and mine is the motherboard and processor, mine being slightly slower.

Yeah the first time you try true high res DP-based VR is a real revelation, for me it was the Aero, almost same res as PCL. I did also try a PCL recently, amazing panels for sure, but coming from the Aero, I found the overall build and software quality and comfort a bit lacking, plus the hammerhead design is just lol.

But yeah it’s a cool option to have in the market, somewhat affordable high res VR with DP.

Time to send my Quest 3 on retirement then. I’ve read somewhere that the difference in clarity between the CL and the Quest 3 is not that noticeable… I’m eager to try the CL but I’m not sure if my system can handle it. I’m also a Sim race so it would be cool to have a clearer image.

Find someone with one and test it out. My dad has been fiddling with settings with his today to see if he can get things even better. I am going to stop by his house to drop off a Nintendo switch controller and I play around with it more. I was wow’d at it the other night, I will see if I get the same impressions when I stop by. If a Christmas bonus comes at the end of the year, I might just pick one up.

Yeah but that isn’t that easy. I really should not know who does have a PCL . So I don’t think this will be possible. The only thing which is possible, Here in the Netherlands, we have a law that states that when you buy something online, you must have the chance to test and inspect it to see if it is what you expected. If you don’t like it, you are allowed to return it. So, I can order one, test it for a week or so, and if it’s not right for me, I can send it back. Perhaps that’s the way to find out if it’s suitable for me.

LOL, what a RIDICULOUS statement you read here :joy:. No doubt made by a disgruntled Q3 owner doing mental gymnastics.

It’s a night and day difference. Q3 does have better lenses and e2e “lense” clarity, but looking at “pixel clarity” it’s not even close.

And this is coming from someone who returned the PCL after 2.5 weeks…

For this law to work you must buy from European seller, not directly from Pimax in China.

If you buy it from them directly, yes. But I can buy it in the Netherlands from a reseller. So I do business with them and therefore I have the right to return it.

But seriously, they didn’t implement canopy weather in VR in 2024?
