Reverb G2 Black Screens

I solved the black-out problem for my HP Reverb G2.
MY issues: WMR and HPRG2 work just fine until I change from desktop to VR mode, then the screens in my G2 go blank. Also, for no apparent reason, WMR would tell me I can’t use 90 FPS settings (when it was working on a previous session).
MY setup: I have 4, 4K monitors run by an EVGA GeForce 2080 Ti graphics card, modestly OC’d (since we can’t buy replacements without a couple of gold bars in the closet). My CPU is an OC’d i7-8700 at ~4 Gz (yeah, it’s on my XMAS list) with 32 Gb VRAM.
MY Setting: I’ll assume that you set MSFS to use only your best GPU if you have one on your motherboard. Like most of you, I experimented and found I could put almost everything on Ultra. This seems to be a personal preference; I like pretty clouds, ground objects to look at, but don’t really care for dozens of ground support vehicles on the taxiways and runways.

NOTE: The WMR blackout issue has nothing to do with your addons or updates; that’s the CTD problem. Clear out add-ons and see if that solves it; if it does, delete the folder and start over, testing as you go. If it doesn’t, you have the download gremlin; reinstall MSFS (took 24 hours for me). As it happens, just after that my BIOS went sideways, so for me, it was rebuilding the OS (which removed my CTDs; I’ll never know why.) Strangely, MSFS installed in 14 hours instead of 24 on a clean OS.

Back to how I solved blackouts
First theory - pulling too much power from the power supply; replaced power supply - no effect (except my 5-year old PS probably needed to be replaced, anyway). Besides, PSs are relatively cheap.

The second theory - Too many monitors: 4 + the 4 or 5 the VR uses virtually. Disabled all-but-one monitor- NO effect, but my fps DID go up and my CPU didn’t max out.

THIRD THEORY (WORKED) - Windows is stupid. (Shoulda just assumed this one, eh?)

  • Open Settings, Mixed Reality, then Headset Display
  • You can leave the “MR Home” settings alone (WMR Home works fine)
  • Change Experience options to “Optimize for Performance” – I believe THIS was the solution
  • Change Adjust display resolution to “Automatic upscaling (best performance)” - ALSO solution
  • Ignore calibration; you have the little button under the headset for that
  • Change Input Switching to Manual
  • Change sleep timeout to 20 min (and don’t take that long away from cockpit LOL)
  • Adjust Frame rate has nothing to do with this issue; set it to 90 or let Windows decide.

With these settings, I’m getting 90 Hz, no blackouts (not even glitches), and reasonable scenery granularity.

Finally, MSFS really doesn’t like it when you load WMR after MSFS, so load WMR before you launch MSFS. Turn off the mirror if you haven’t already (steals 3-5 fps for me, but I do turn it on for streaming). (Bold-faced advertisement: “StallSpinCrashNBurn” on YT and Twitch)

Similarly, Return to Desktop mode, THEN close MSFS (wait 'til it’s done closing), THEN close WMR to avoid a “CTD”.
