Rift S vs Others

Hey all

I am not yet into VR and was thinking of purchasing a headset, purely for FS for the time being. I have a capable PC but I cant decide which headset to go for. I am tempted by the Rift S’s new lower price as the Quest 2 needs $$ to get the cable, comfortable strap etc etc.

Do you think getting the Rift S as an entry VR headset is worth it or do the additional resolution / HZ make a difference?

A had tried a friend’s PS VR a while ago and was getting motion sickness so I am not sure if this has to do with the resolution / refresh rate or both?

The Rift S is great, not only in MSFS but other games as well - I’m sure you’ll be happy with it. Just be aware that the resolution is lower than the HP G2, so you’ll probably need to zoom in on glass panels to read small text.

I’ve been using my Rift S in DCS and iRacing up until now and it has been flawless. Only one gripe in DCS - distant planes look a bit blocky or distorted, but that is down to the resolution limits of the headset. And by distant, I’m talking about 5+ KM away. Probably not an issue in MSFS as you aren’t trying to target them

to be fair, DCS provides a sense of actual 3D space. IRL, 5km away is still pretty fricken far. if going into VR turns the game into a 1:1 scale (it certainly feels that way), then yeah objects in the distance will appear as specks until you get closer. It also applies in War Thunder

You will need to play around with the settings in FS2020 if you decide to get into VR to get the smoothest experience; it’s not the most optimized. I don’t know your specs, so you might get lucky.

However, i’d recommend saving for a G2 if you’d like a higher resolution. But if you’d still like to get into VR at an entry level, the Rift S is perfect (so long as you don’t mind being required to use your facebook account to even use the headset)

Overall…I recommend the Oculus Rift S or Quest 2 for

I haven’t tried any others, and I’m no expert, but I’m freakin loving my rift s with msfs vr. It’s not the same graphics quality as on my flat screen, but the level of immersion is 1000 times worth the small downgrade in graphics quality. Have fun.

Rift S is great. After some tweaks i get awesome frames nice smooth flight and great visuals! Immersive!

Im ont the old rift cv1 on a 2070super i7 7700k pc. If you want good frames on your rift s I hope you have a better machine than mine cause after the wowness calms a bit the low frames kind of gets to me and I feel I need the best in the 3000 series and maybe a new cpu to get ok frames with ok settings. I dont know if the rift s is less demanding than cv1. I also wonder if the msfs is better optimized towards the wmr headsets, hp reverb g1, g2 and samsung oddessey+ because they can use the windows open xr app with its render slider that is within the app itself. If you are getting the rift s only for msfs i might reconsider.

The most important thing to consider with Rift S is the IPD. If you are outside the average (63mm) by more than a few mm you may not like it.

Yes, people come on saying it doesn’t make a difference to them, but, well people always want to argue and be right. I had to return mine (IPD 68mm) because the FOV was awful with no proper IPD adjusment. Mind you - you’ll have the same issue with Quest 2. This is why I ended up getting an Index - which I think is way overpriced, but it does the job and does it well, so…

That’s my worry too, I’ve just ordered a rift s that’s due to be collected today but I never even thought about IPD…just measured it now on a app and it’s giving me a reading of 58mm which I think may cause issues so I’m torn as to whether I should cancel the order

thanks for the replies all - very useful indeed. I may just wait for the Reverb 2 to get back in stock and go with this one instead. @NeilPearlJam enjoy your new Rift S and pls let us know impressions!

Test it first, I have a CV1 but know the Rift S seems to have a larger center hotspot which mean you could deal possibly with your IPD. I was far from the fixed IPD of the DevKit oculus DK2 years ago but was able to deal with it by moving slightly left right the headset, and the center spot was very small.

Rift S have a better resolution but a lower framerate AFAIK (80 vs 90). All in one that’s a question I often asked to persons which upgraded from CV1 to Rift S and they said performances was nearly the same.

Note I still don’t have upgraded mine, I want to upgrade my CG first.
