Rock On Fire - The Red Centre of Australia

This is a complete departure from our normal flying events in that we will be retracing one of my actual tourist air safari routes back in my early commercial air charter ops in the Australian Outback.

We depart from the town of Alice Springs, situated in the red centre of Australia and fly west and south west along the west McDonnell Ranges, arriving eventually at the township of Yulara, situated just a stones throw from the iconic ULURU, the Aboriginal name given to the previously named Ayers Rock.

Along the way we will either be dropping in or overflying many tourist spots along the way such as:

The Gap - the gateway north and south from the town of Alice Springs
Pine Gap - The American Spy Staion Facility (Restricted Area which we will violate)
West McDonnell Ranges
Standley Chasm
Ormiston Gorge
Glen Helen Gorge
Gosse Bluff - A huge meteorite impact crater
Kings Canyon
Kings Creek Station - huge cattle and camel station
Lake Amadeus - expansive salt lake
The Olgas (named KATA TJUTA by the Aboriginals)
Ayers Rock (named ULURU by the Aboriginals)
Yulara Resorts
CONNELLAN Airport at “The Rock”

This air charter tour was one of the favorites with tourists from both overseas and within Australia. and also one of my favourite flights to conduct.

Along the way you will be in awe of the vastness and the amazing desert colours, predominanty red and ochre, that will spread out before and below us as we make this 3 hour flight from “Alice” to “The Rock” (as they are colloquially termed). Interesting facts about the landscape and features will be provided, along with a few funny stories of events from these actual tours.

We will be in the Beechcraft King Air for this Air Safari as it is able to conquer the “Tyranny Of Distance” that is an ever constant challenge out in these parts of Australia with it’s good cruising speed. No doubt you may find 1 or 2 parked at our final desitination.

As per all flights in this hostile and remote region, bring plenty of water and some survival rations, along with sunglasses and a broad brimmed hat to combat the relentless glare and heat of the sun. As well, make sure you submit a flight plan, with a SAR WATCH time nominated (Search And Rescue nominated time of arrival at destination) to ensure people come looking for you if you have aitrcraft problems and have to put down in the desert. (Just joking, but in real life these all were a must to do).

To give you a bit more of an insight into the sights you will see along the way, click on this link Discord and you will be provided with a list of photographs taken during these safaris, ordered sequentially to sync with each leg of the flight.

The weather will be “Clear Skies” and the departure time to set in the weather drop down will be 1515hrs (local time on the 13th July). This time of departure is critical for the flight success.
