Description
The Rolling Cache feature in MSFS2024 does not work correctly. Any attempt to enable or configure the rolling cache results in the following warning:
Invalid rolling cache path
Rolling cache path is invalid.
The simulator never successfully creates a ROLLINGCACHE.CCC file, regardless of path or size settings.
Steps Tried (none resolved the issue)
-
Edited the UserCfg.opt manually with valid paths → MSFS overwrote them.
-
Deleted the UserCfg.opt and let the sim regenerate it → issue persisted.
-
Verified correct permissions and free space on both C: and custom drives.
-
Manually created custom cache folders before pointing MSFS to them → still “invalid path.”
-
Reset Rolling Cache settings to defaults → no change.
-
Fully uninstalled MSFS2024 and performed a clean reinstall → issue still present.
Expected Result
- When enabling Rolling Cache, MSFS should accept a valid folder path, create the
ROLLINGCACHE.CCC file, and retain size/path settings after restart.
Actual Result
-
Any attempt to set a rolling cache location fails with “invalid path.”
-
Settings reset on restart, and no cache file is ever created.
Impact
-
Cannot use Rolling Cache at all.
-
Causes unnecessary bandwidth usage since the sim must always stream data.
-
Settings menu becomes misleading, as changes never persist.
Additional Notes
- Issue is reproducible 100% of the time after a clean reinstall.
I really need help with this as this is making the sim nearly unplayable with stutters, weird texture glitches, overall performance drop i even used chatgpt and he couldn’t help so i decided to use forums.
Just saying to any moderator that is seeing this post, i didn’t find any duplicates of this post and i need help as there is no solution that i found.
In the UI it states the default path where it normally creates the rolling cache file
But when i click to edit the location it opens a different path that i chose which dosen’t work aswell
Yes the configured path exists.
Yes it does but there is no rolling cache file inside.
If you would like a video tell me please.
If you double click on the path from the UI, a window opens but you’ll not see the cache file there:
You need to copy the full path and open it from the window explorer to see the cache file:
So if you get an invalid path error message, there should be something incorrectly configured but I don’t how how it could have happened and how to correct it.
Yeah, weirdly the cache file dosent appear even in the correct path and in windows explorer, I don’t know how this happened I even tried a full reinstall but still dosent appear I really need more help
I have the exact same problem as karuytt, I tried uninstalling the SIM twice but the rolling cache file is missing, I also formatted the PC twice, but it is always the same in the rolling cache menu from invalid path. I looked in the folders the rolling cache file is not being created, recently there was a cumulative Windows update I don’t think it has anything to do with it.
After everything you’ve already tried, the following solution might seem a bit too simple but it actually solved the problem for me:
-
Make sure you have enough free space on C:. (Which you already confirmed).
-
In Windows Explorer, also make sure the default folder offered by the sim does not have the “hidden” attribute.
-
Delete the rolling cache file in Windows Explorer at the default path, if there’s still one present.
-
Start the sim and ensure DevMode is not enabled. If it is, disable it in the settings and restart the sim.
-
Launch the sim again and go straight to the “Online Settings” without doing anything else first. Click on “Reset to defaults” and then on “Save and Back” (don’t change anything else you can do that later). Then close the sim right away.
-
On the next start, the sim should create a 16GB file in the default location. After that, I was able to enlarge the rolling cache again and even move it to a different location without any issues.
-
If that still doesn’t work, I was given the tip to repeat the above steps while launching the sim as administrator each time. I didn’t need to do that myself, though.
I went through the same threads that DementedCorn327 shared back then.
There are dozens of other tips in there that might help as well.
Something else came to mind:
For me, the problem only started because the custom path where I had moved the rolling cache no longer existed (I had disconnected the drive).
The steps I mentioned above only worked again after I made the old custom path available once more.
Meaning: I couldn’t even get the sim to use the default path until the old one was back in the system!
(So it’s really just the path there doesn’t need to be a rolling cache file in it.)
This is the path where the rolling cache should be created and i set it in the sim
As you can see the Rolling cache file was not created following your steps.
Okay guys i have a update, on the Online section if you click reset to default it dosen’t even rest.
I also tried, but the reset did nothing
Hey as ur a moderator can you please bring more people in to fix this problem i haven’t got a reply in over 23days
You may not.
