I understand that this game is generally CPU limited but it feels like my RTX 3080 should have more utilization than the 8-12% I usually see. I’m running 4K Ultra at max settings (except for scaling at 80). My system:
i9-9900k
RTX 3080
32GB RAM
1TB NVME
Are other folks with similar setup and settings seeing their RTX 3080 being utilized similarly? BTW, my GPU temp while flying is around 70 degrees.
Thanks for the quick reply. Does that setup result in actual overall better performance (less stutters) or does it just get the GPU usage up? Will give it a try.
I can’t comment with much expertise here since I have a previous gen 2070S. Having said that a utilisation of 8-12% does seem unbelievably low.
As you have said, you could do with some replies from others who have your GPU. Let’s hope that Nvidia have put more than one 3080 up for sale so that we can get a better idea of whether this is typical.
In that case I don’t trust those numbers at all, a 3090 isn’t fast enough to give 30+ fps at 10% usage (or it would handle >300 fps at 100%). Try checking some other way (e.g. MSI Afterburner if you’re using the task manager, or vice versa). Also make sure you check the numbers while flying and not while alt-tabbed or similar.
Not a stupid question! It’s a bit more cumbersome than it should be IMO.
The simplest solution to check once is to double-click the graph at the bottom and resize the pop-out window. Then play a bit, and go check the history.
To get it real-time, go to the settings -> monitoring and check “Show in On-Screen Display” for the items you want, perhaps GPU usage and framerate, frametime (w/ graph).
Next go to the On-Screen Display tab and set a hotkey to toggle it.
If it doesn’t work when you toggle, make sure Afterburner was running when MSFS launched and it should work.
Hi how are you
I am not very knowledgeable on the subject but I do not know why the one of the GPU and the CPU does not show quite well
For me the temperature has no relation with the use example.
20% = 60º.
You have tried go to settings >> games >> game settings and activate hardware accelerated gpu programming.
Also look for the Microsoft Flight Simulator application and put it in high performance so the GPU will get the most out of it.
My 1080 usually sits at around 95%, so I am very much GPU bound. This never really changed much with the recent CPU improvements, but my frame rates overall were improved. I would expect to see a decent hike with a new GPU, but then I’ll be solidly CPU bound.
Maybe your render scaling is pointless as your GPU is so much more powerful, and should be able to handle 4K with ease, at 100.
You mentioned stutters.
My personal experience was terrible stutters with any NVIDIA driver after the 457.xx versions.
I have an RTX3090 and Acer 4k monitors.
I found the problem was GSync. My monitors are Freesync and are supposed to be compatible but there is obviously an issue introduced with the latest drivers.
Turning off GSync removed the stutters.
To be fair, for the frame rates needed for MFSF to be smooth, I don’t think GSync/Freesync are actually needed. MSFS is not exactly a fast shoot-em-up game
Well folks, I finally got the MSI afterburner overlay working and it does look like the previous monitoring app I was using was ■■■■. Seeing 80-90% GPU usage now. Thank you for the help!
Okay. Just a bit surprised that’s all that it could run so hot with so little use. Although nowhere near up to the same spec as a 3080 my MSI 2070 S (three fans) runs at about 60ish degrees C at an 80ish utilisation with FS2020. It’s overclocked too.
Presumably the new ones must run pretty hot then at 100% utilisation.
Here is how it looks as we speak. Flying from SFO to Phoenix in a CJ4 at 22K feet with lots of clouds. What’s interesting is that my previous overlay app had me using about 16 out of the 32GB whereas MSI seems to be telling me I’m using a lot less. I wonder which is correct.
Yes they do! I have to turn the radiator off in my room and open the windows after a few minutes as the heat output from the RTX3090 is quite phenomenal
