Hello,
I’m putting this thread out since I would value your input.
I’m currently using the MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X, which has been an exceptional card. However, I managed to bag an MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X for £1650 at Curry’s. I have been generally concerned about VRAM usage once DX12 arrives, and therefore always feel the 3080 was a slightly temporary card.
I’ve seen quite a few threads debating between the 2 cards so I thought it would be of interest to people that I benchmark between the two. I haven’t really done true benchmarking so I thought I would open it to all of you on what you would like to see - whether VRAM usage etc. I can upload the clips onto Youtube so you see the scenarios I’m putting it under.
Fortunately because they’re both from the Suprim X line it’s a true apples to apples comparison.
I can benchmark them on a 4k monitor, Rift S, and my soon to arrive Reverb G2 assuming that it works(my spare 1080p is a bit pointless).
I think you will be better off using Vr on the G2 with that 3090. I’m using the 3090 FE with a G2 and have used up to 16GB of VRAM quite often with my settings.
I would be inclined to agree. I suppose the nature of the investigation would be for prospective buyers who aren’t sure about which one to get for msfs. In certain scenarios due to being cpu bound I can imagine a 3090 would be bottlenecked to the same as a 3080’s performance
One thing is the assigned VRAM and the other is the actual VRAM usage.
Tools like msiafterburner only show the allocated VRAM, not the one it actually consumes.
In the developer options you can see the two parameters.
With my 3080 it allocates 9gb of VRAM to me, but it only consumes 6gb really with my HP Reverb G2 and high settings.
I’ve certainly hesitated a lot between 3080 and 3090 - at the moment I’ve still waiting for my day 1 order of a 3080 and since it’s been taking so long (and might still not arrive before March or April), I’ve been considering cancelling that and grabbing a 3090. My main need for a GPU update is VR only flight simming and MSFS is certainly a sim that I would like to eventually use with airliners or more than GA anyway.
So, in short, that sort of benchmarking is really of high value to me, but I don’t have a specific question about it, I’d like to see various aspects tested in VR basically.
