Hi, I am new here and new to MSFS. I am trying to get my computer fit for some flight simming.
I understand that I need a new graphics card and budget limits me to a choice (after days of web research) between those two in topic heading.
Is more VRAM in 4060 better or more processing power in 4070? Planning to start with GA planes in smaller airports but guessing I will want to try airliners in the future. Prioritizing good flight experience but of course also enjoy views. There are few benchmarks on 4060 Ti 16GB so hard for me to judge.
Present equipment:
For some sims like DCS, more VRAM is better. You pay the higher price for VRAM. Just compare a 3090 with 24GB of VRAM to a 4060 with 8GB; massive price difference. MSFS is designed to fit on an XBOX which has limited VRAM, so you should be okay with 8GB of VRAM. Don’t forget the big sales are coming up (Black Friday, etc.).
I have understood that only Nvidia 40-series offer Frame Generation and that I should strive for that, do you agree @OldpondGL? I don’t believe I will go to DCS, MSFS is where I am heading. I interprete you as 4070 could be better for MSFS despite less (12 instead of 16) VRAM, right?
Yes, the 4000 series cards are the only ones with Frame Generation. I would go for the 16GB of vram. Both cards have great processing power, and lots of great shelf life for both. I’m still running my 3080Ti with 12GB, and it’s good for another couple of years yet.
By the way, there are web sites where you can check the power consumption of all your components to make sure your power supply can handle the upgraded GPU. 650W is on the low side these days.
You haven’t stated what resolution you are going to be using with the card. If 1080p stick with the 4060 but if you’re after higher resolutions you need to be more looking at the 4070.
FWIW I run an 8GB RTX 3080 at 4K resolution at mostly Ultra settings, 200 OLOD, 300 TLOD and I get around 30FPS at highly detailed add on airports, otherwise typically 40+ when flying. I have never had major stutter issues either. From what I have seen this is likely unusual but just an indication of when things work decently well. Ryzen 7 3700X
EDIT: Oops, don’t know where my brain was at! My original spec 3080 has 10GB memory of course, not 8!
If you’re running the game itself on 2 or 3 that’ll make a big difference. If you’re only running desktop apps while running the game on one, it’s negligible. Personally, 8 would be too little ram for me. I’m using a 2nd gen 3080 with 12 GB. The game uses all of it. I keep hearing the 4070 is usually the way to go for price point though.
So main intention is one 1080p monitor, more only if it works well.
8 is ruled out for me as well - I am choosing between 4060 Ti 16 GB and 4070 12 GB.
I have done extensive research and learned that 4060 Ti with 8GB is no good for this. My choice is between 4060Ti with 16GB or 4070 with 12 GB.
There are almost no benchmarks on MSFS with 4060Ti 16GB out there. All are done with 8GB version. And 4070 beats it easily. Question is how much that is due to 4GB more VRAM or faster GPU. If it is the VRAM factor then 4060Ti with 16GB could be a good option. In price there is not much difference.
Hello,
I did go for the 4060Ti with 16GB.
I am very satisfied with performance but of course I have not much to compare with.
And honestly when I have checked memory usage while flying it has mostly been below 8GB so I don’t know if I have any advantage of those extra 8GB…
I didn’t think GeForce Experience could change the in sim setting from DX11 to DX12beta? If you check your settings in the sim, is it set to DX12 beta?
