I would like to squash any falsehoods that there is no patch to install currently. That won’t be until some time next week.
Build 2004 of Windows 10 comes with Hardware Assisted GPU Scheduling, or HAGS. Google how to turn that on, but in XP at least it made no noticeable difference. Perhaps here it does, as MSFS seems to do a much better job of getting more out of your hardware. For example, in XP I am almost always CPU limited. Here, I am mostly GPU limited.
Which is great as I have a 1080, and plan to buy a 3090.
But even with this “lowly” 1080, couple with a 9900K, I can fly almost everywhere at 1080p/Ultra presets, and get 40-50fps. Something I could never even dream of with XP. Big cities cause drops, flying over San Francisco drops me to 35fps, but you can get away with that in a flight sim.
Should you update to windows 10, version 2004 ?
Having updated to the latest nvidia driver when it came out I thought I would remain on windows 1909 to assess performance before updating windows. I didn’t see any gains with the new driver and so I decided to update to the latest windows version 2004 this week.
Before updating I manually created a restore point and made a system image of the OS drive. I then updated and rebooted the computer after the reboot. I enabled HAGS but failed to see any improvement when running MSFS 2020. I shut down the PC.
A couple of hours later I rebooted the PC to be greeted by a blue screen. Multiple reboots later I still wasn’t able to get past the BIOS screen and into Windows 10. Thankfully, I was able to restore the PC to the original 1909 version.
So, should you update? Maybe yes give it a try but take precautions like me before you do so that you can revert to your pre update installation. It didn’t work out well for me but it might for you.
