Scenery Gateway System - World Hub

There are so many minor scenery mods that I keep seeing online. As well as other airports etc. I’m confused as to why Asobo didn’t think about this in the first place, as now we have loads of mods but no official trusted repository for them. It should be like the market place (which itself isn’t great).

This is much needed.

Hoping this gains traction. This is essentially step 1 to the scenery gateway system…

Thanks for taking this up @Jakenben123! I wasn’t able to watch the stream live and only viewed it now, and was pretty disappointed to know the question was misunderstood and the devs ended up answering something else and didn’t address this topic.

@Jummivana just a bit of feedback, please take a few extra seconds to explain the details of any questions from the bugs or the wishlist categories, because often times they’re proposing unique features or bugs which may be uncommon and will need some short explaining for the devs to fully get the idea behind the topic and it’s associated question.

I noticed you did the above with the question about the sensitivity issue and the option to save presets for different flight control setups for different aircraft, and Sebastian did admit that this was something he never thought of before and that it was a very good idea and would look into implementing it.

Agreed on this. It still needs to be set up similar to the Xplane scenery gateway. I think the devs need to do their research on how the xplane gateway works, so that way they can understand what we are pushing for and why it’s so important.

I remember when Xplane airports were nothing but a runway with a taxiway on the side. After the gateway, my local airport looks almost like the real thing. I also edited another airport and it got cleared to be in the sim “KAAF” if you want to roast my design skills ;). Anyways, it’s actually so easy to use the WED for xplane that I figured it out without any tutorials.
We NEED something like this for MSFS if we want to cover the most airports. There aren’t enough devs to edit every single airport in the world EVEN if we submit errors to zendesk. The only people who know what the airports actually look like are the people that would edit them!

Of course! And thanks for starting this thread in the first place! I’m committed to finding ways to make sure this sim at least retains all of the best features of the old sims so that it starts to truly feel like a replacement  The scenery and graphics are so great that I don’t want to open XP again, but there’s still a number of things that pull me back and leave me wishing we have what we do in the other sims.

Agree on this

I thought the marketplace would be for this, being more like Steam’s Workshop.
That said, what you propose is even better… Since if it’s in the base scenery, it can also be used in multiplayer, or even in missions/challenges.

A lot of airports (and other things) are missing at the moment so this would greatly increase the speed by things will be added/improved.

Couldn’t agree more !

Perfect example:

I want to edit this soo very much, landing on grass just isn’t the same.

I think it would be better to report the many missing points and errors directly to the world map instead of creating a third party file in the “community” directory. We could imagine users being able to update the name of the taxiway, the frequencies, parking location, the exact location of the windsocks, buildings … All supervised by Microsoft to avoid overflows. It would no longer be necessary to download the Addons. Everyone would have access to these updates directly on the map provided by Microsoft. Simmer community has a lot of willpower…

Wanted to share some news!

So if you watched the Q&A, Jorg gave us an email to contact him at with any specifics regarding ideas for the scenery gateway, aircraft mods, etc.

I contacted him with an explanation of the sort of airport gateway system we are interested in, and he responded back saying that they are going to look at it in the next week and see what they can do to support something like this! “It makes total sense … just need to figure out the logistics.”

So excited that this might become a reality, and it’s so heartwarming to have gotten a response back so quickly - this team is so incredibly dedicated to making this sim incredible for us, and they deserve all of the appreciation and respect in the world. I feel so bad for the hate that they get on these forums.

Is there a place to share our modified airports inside MFS forum? I searched all over it and couldn’t find anything.
The airport i modified its LRCL located in Romania. I am sure none of them will think to correct this airport :grinning: which has an old layout.
I do have the files ready to share with the community and cant find a place where too…
…here are some before and after pictures…

Some very good news regarding the Scenery Gateway System for the community.

Jorg has moved this feature request up in priority and already has people working on a prototype.

Excellent news

20 days late, but man that work is incredible! Nice job! Can’t wait until this system allows you to get that in the sim!

i found this website where a lots of users are uploading their sceneries

I stopped working on LRCL because they are two versions and its no point having another one and
I uploaded LRBM in stead

Enjoy!

This is what I sent in based on using XP’s gateway and Orbx’s free airport packs for FSX/P3D. Apologies about the formatting not transferring…

Main take-aways:

  • Creators shouldn’t upload custom assets or textures ( legal, performance, file size, validation issues and additional testing required )

  • Fully Customized Airports / Scenery should go into a Freeware section of the Marketplace

  • There needs to be an opt-out for players.

IMO – a Scenery Gateway should update default airports for all users, and should only use assets available in the MSFS library.
• Any airport improved with custom geometry / assets should be placed in a Freeware section of the marketplace.
• Scenery Gateway improvements should be simple and require minimal time to test and validate.
• There should be an opt-out, if players don’t want the improved airports ( if I remember, XP had an opt-out, and Orbx free airport packs required a manual install – I might be wrong about XP )

Scenery Gateway functions could be:

  1. Update Airport Database
    a. Add Missing Airports to database
    b. Correct ICAO code or Airport Name
    i. ( currently we have to add a fake airport with the ‘wrong’ ICAO code, set it to closed and suppress all content for it – then add a 2nd airport with the correct data )
    c. Update closed airports in database
    i. Players shouldn’t be able to select or spawn at a closed airport ( popular historical airports like Meigs and Kai Tak will be added by users/3rd party as additional scenery, anyways )
ii. Should leave runways / taxiways in place ( if realistic – ie recently closed )
iii. Add closed “X” markings as needed
iv. Players could still land there if they really wanted, but the airport would “feel closed”

• Submissions should cite source of information ( show incorrect MSFS ICAO code, then link to data source online w correct ICAO – preferably more than one source )

  1. Improve Existing Airports
    a. Use only MSFS library assets, textures, etc ( doesn’t require any other addons or libraries )
    b. Improve runways, taxiways, parking, structure placement, etc
    c. Improve markings ( using stock textures )
    d. Improve terraforming, vegetation type / placement
    i. smooth rough surfaces
ii. remove trees or objects that interfere with flight path ( some trees are too close to the end of the runway )
iii. Improve look of surrounding terrain
iv. Improve look or placement of surrounding buildings, landmarks, vegetation, rivers/lakes etc
    e. add library decorations to improve look of airport

3. Improve / Add Scenery and Landmarks
a. Using the MSFS library, add placements of landmark objects as VFR checkpoints, POIs and décor.

• Submissions should cite source of information ( Bing / Google Maps link ) so that airport/scenery improvements can be easily validated.
• Submissions need to be reviewed for accuracy, quality, performance and inappropriate content
o There’s plenty of people that will do a great job updating airports
o There’s also a lot of people with good intentions that won’t do a good job or make an airport worse
o …and there’s probably a few people that will try to include malicious content or inappropriate drawings with taxiway lines
• Like the forums, it might make sense to have a trusted community panel / moderators to review submissions for content, quality and performance

  1. Add a reporting system
    a. Performance / Stability issues
    b. Inaccurate content / data
    c. Inappropriate content

IMO you shouldnt be able to opt out, i dont see a reason why people shouldnt have a more accurate representation of an airport if it is available. and if they have addon scenery then it will overwrite the default airport anyway so that isnt an issue
