Settings not being saved and unable to keep between sim restarts

For some reason, don’t know why, doesn’t matter what I do, some graphics settings revert to “medium”. Specifically, these ones:

I’ve tried to set a preset like Ultra, but it doesn’t matter what, they aren’t saved, my previous settings are reverted, but these specific items are set to medium, regardless what I change.

So, looks like the sim has

  • For some items, saved my previous options, which aren’t overwritten. For example, no matter what I do, Motion Blur stays set to “Off”, which was my old setting.
  • For some others, apparently they’ve been saved to “Medium” (which I never saved in that state).
  • Lastly, none of the changes are saved and as soon as I close the sim and reopen it, they come back to this state: some saved as I had them a couple of days ago, and some set to Medium.

Any idea? Could open a bug or a zendesk item, but thought about asking here before.

Thanks!

Seb

I had a similar problem a while ago. Turns out it was a corrupted Cloud save file, and this is the only thing that fixed it.

https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409228619538-How-to-delete-a-cloud-save-on-PC-to-fix-some-loading-issues-or-reset-the-logbook

Unfortunately, like it says in the warning, it meant basically starting from scratch: Choose avatar, reset all graphics options, set up control bindings (thankfully I use SPAD with mostly blank in-sim control bindings, so that part wasn’t a huge deal, like it will be for those who have spent hours configuring theirs - oh, and good luck backing up your bindings…) logbook vaporized (that’s OK, it’s useless anyway for my needs.)

I really hoped this didn’t require a cloud delete.

  • I’ll have to manually reassign all controls to all airplanes. I have a lot of custom assigned controls, since I fly airliners, GA, turboprops.
  • Lose my flight hours (I don’t use any third party app, so… well, lost. And I do use the logbook to track some airports I liked)
  • Reset all my graphic settings, which I’ve carefully set to have a middle point I like between performance and quality

Seriously, isn’t there any way to fix this without deleting everything? Already had this happening in 2020, I really expected a better workaround in 2024, like for example being able to upload my current settings overwriting whatever there is in the cloud.

This is a royal pain, and lost time just because there isn’t any better mechanism to ensure the settings in the sim (which are correct) are correctly saved.

After all, the issue is in the cloud, over which I have absolutely zero control. Why an issue in MSobo end has to affect me that much? Just reassigning every control is hours of work.

Edit: obviously the rant isn’t against you and I’m thankful for your help, it’s just very disappointing that an issue that isn’t on my end has these consequences

Believe me when I say I feel your pain - because I felt it as well.

I think the worst thing for you would be trying to back up your control bindings and having the restore fail. I exported my settings for each peripheral, which writes an XML file for each. But when I tried to import the XML files, they all failed. Ridiculous.

I seem to recall there was some info on the web about how to make it work. I suggest doing some research before deleting your Cloud settings. Export one peripheral (like the mouse,) make a change, then try to import the XML back. See if your old settings are restored.

Only a guess, but could it be, that your userCFG.opt is set to read only?
