Found this setting, and changed it from automatic West Europe to West Europe (which has the lowest ping to me). The game became unplayable with extreme loading times. Set it back to automatic, and loading times are back to normal (which is still very annoying, but at least not 20 minutes long).

Settings: Online -> Multiplayer servers

Do you actually see other players? I fly with my dad and not once have I seen him in multiplayer.
