Ship FS2020 VR with OpenXR like Minecraft (see inside), drop WMR, support most headset right away

Asobo should consider developing VR support with OpenXR first and foremost.

Even Minecraft is shifting to OpenXR:

IMHO this makes no sense at all to develop for WMR APIs and then later develop for another API. Unless OpenXR is still lacking a feature paramount to the success of FS2020 in VR, I see no reason to invest in a proprietary WMR development limiting VR to Reverb G2 (and other WMR only headsets) at this stage.

Here are a few reasons:

  • Microsoft is claiming they are supporting OpenXR for a couple years.
  • Valve is claiming they are supporting 80% of OpenXR and they will fully support it shortly.
  • OpenXR is becoming a defacto standard.

Shipping FS2020 VR with OpenXR shouldn’t change anything regarding Reverb G2 announcement because WMR is already implementing 100% OpenXR API (supposedly).

Once Valve has implemented 100% of the API, FS2020 will run in VR with Valve Index/Vive etc… And shipping FS2020 in OpenXR could give enough pressure to Valve for them to finish implementing the remaining 20% OpenXR APIs!

Is there any articles or interviews Asobo specifically said that they were not going to utilize OpenXR?

They’ve announced VR will ship exclusively for Reverb G2 first. This was further commented on this means any WMR headset first. Should they be developing with OpenXR APIs they couldn’t say VR support is restricted to WMR headsets.
