Should I Get 2024 now?

OK. So, close to a month after MSFS2024 being released, I have not bought it. I have owned every MSFS since version 1 and I was extremely excited with the news and hype about 2024. I am totally aware of the disasterous launch, but can see that most of the intial server-related issues have been resolved. I also have read numerous posts ranging from “I’m having no problems, except for minor bugs, and have been enjoying flights very much for over a week, etc. etc…” to “This sim is a toal disaster and I haven’t been able to fly more than 10 minutes, etc, etc..”

So- the bottom line question… SHOULD I WAIT? Should I wait for months of updates/patches or is this sim usable, ignoring occasional bugs? With a rock solid internet connection and a coulple of years old PC with a decent AMD Radeon card, is it usable and can I expect to be able to do an airline flight from point A to point B with ATC at least getting me there and lined up with the ILS? Can I take a Cessna 172 and sightsee and not have CTD’s?

I know this is a very broad question but what does the average user with good internet and a good but not state-of-the-art rig think about this sim a month after release? Is it worth getting now?

It’s still not to the level 2020 is.

I am an avid FS fan, and had NO regrets buying 2020 at release. My opinion for you is wait. I tried to request a refund and failed for 2024, already uninstalled once before trying again. I am not having a fun time.

Biggest reasons to name a few:
-MANY broken airplanes, especially those from 2020
-Career mode is great for beginners, but lacks freedom for experienced independent pilots.
-Lessons learned from 2020 were not applied, including airports / world depiction.
Camera system is well…not my cup of tea and not really an improvement despite FCR.
-For me, the performance is worse than 2020.

Meh I would wait until after the next wave of changes when they get marketplace up and running. It’s going to be another round of everyone sorting out their sim again, then the repercussions of all the issues that will cause. I’m still 90% 2020, and just peek into Frustration Simulator 2024 occasionally. It’s a time vampire right now. It makes you appreciate 2020 more, so there’s that. I’m moving closer to 99% 2020.

If they decide they have to ceede and put assets on HD and mix up career and controls and traffic (which they definitely should) you’re just going to have to relearn and reinvest efforts yet again. I can’t imagine the hullabaloo 3rd party add-ons are going to stir up. The default 172 is giving them fits. Can’t believe it took me until 24 for me to start using neofly.. .

I pre-ordered, requested and was granted a refund, read users I trust here being able to make a go with it regardless of the issues, and repurchased it.

I can’t get past the bugs. We’re all different, but for me I can’t do a single thing without one (or more) poking me in the eye.

I’m on here seeking input and entering bug reports more than I’m flying and enjoying flight simulation.

The brief period between the refund and the repurchase I flew 2020 and was simply enjoying flight simming tremendously.

And all of that is with an absolute vanilla sim.

Take from that what you will.

Again, we are all different.

Depends on how you are using it, Free Flight is great depending on the aircraft. I am using the Fenix A320 with BATC and I have not touched 2020 in the past 3 weeks. Great experience for me although there is the lack of “good” aircraft at the moment. I have not had any of these issues most are talking about but I am not using Career mode or any of the default aircraft. The 172 was the first plane I tried and it flew very nice. Vision Jet is also fantastic. The only CTD’s I have had were during Controller setup early-on. As far as default ATC, cannot comment on that as I have never used it but I think it is similar to 2020…in other words, no improvements from what I have read.

I waited too, but cracked after the first patch and bought it.
I only bought the standard version though, I did intend to buy PD but did not want to drop £130 for something that clearly had a lot of issues.
I have no regrets, but so far I only use free flight, I am holding off on the other game modes until some more patches are rolled out.
I have had no CTD.
The oustanding issues you can see listed in the forums.
I have 5900x, Radeon RX 6600, 32Gb Ram and M2 drive and regard game performance as overall acceptable.
My view is the pros outweigh the cons.

Flying the BS B60 Grand Duke in 2020 right now between add-on airports on Series X. Everything works, the flight is smooth, all my hardware is usable with no surprises. Fun!

The 172 isn’t the worst offender, but if you compare against 2020 you will see and can’t unsee. Eg: turn radius for taxiing, rotation speed, climb performance.

I sit mid-point between casual and ‘hardcore’ in my sim requirements, I suspect.
With solid internet on Xbox, I’m having a blast. There are occasional bugs and issues that clearly will be resolved, but they are not hampering my enjoyment.

It is very good, absolutely the best flight simulator in the history of flight simulation.

If you are hard up for money, just try it for a month on XBox PC game pass.

Echoing others here: wait until they fix the lighting in the aircraft, avionics AND until 3rd party developpers make their products compliant. But things have to happen inside the sim before that happens.

how much vram do you have

I would say keep your 2020 as is and game pass 2024 to occasionally tinker. Especially if you have a ton of mods and freeware assets tied up in 2020. You start missing those 200+ things you’ve tweaked pretty quickly. The best parts of 24 currently are in the most basic operations in the basic fleet.

Just interaction with the tree tree synthetic voices will make you want to do short hops in places you can just enjoy the scenery changes. Turn pg off and stay away from cities that you’re expecting the specific skyline.

This is so subjective, I feel like only you can answer it. My philosophy has been that FS24 is only going to gradually improve after months and years. There won’t be some magic day where everything is truly “ready”. So why wait? I went ahead and preordered and jumped on day 1, knowing it was going to be a mix of ups and downs.

Perhaps you have a specific threshold though, like specific plane and location or activity, that’s going to see a lot of attention on a subsequent patch. If you really wanted to use the PC-24, or do heavy lifting cargo flights in the sim, you absolutely need to wait lol.

You can do a nice airliner flight, but the ATC is still janky at times. You can see some beautiful sights flying around the National Parks in the 172, but you also may get a few CTDs in the process. All the new features are a major step up from 2020 for me, but every time I use them I’m always reminded at how half-baked and buggy they are too. It’s gonna be like that for a looooong time. So get busy simming, or get busy… doing something else lol.

One word… WAIT.

I just sense a major UI and controls overhaul is going to come unapologetically and a lot of tweaks and tricks people have invested time in are going to be upheaved. They don’t even have live axis tracking to adjust sensitivities yet.

I jumped the shark and uninstalled 2020 and lost those two days forever. Although I rebuilt lean and mean and it’s running like a scalded dog now. Adding more features I should have added many months ago. And it all works.

Would you tell your friends to buy it? Only if they enjoy chasing bugs because I’m not really simming in 2024, I’m waiting for the next bug to appear. I go to 2020 for a nice relaxing flight. I would wait til the dust settles.

It is getting better. Apart from a couple of hours in the bug ridden steam dial C172, I have spent the rest using the A2A Comanche. 29 hours in it so far.

The thing is that bugs appear to be getting squashed silently. The walkaround would not work with the comanche in VR, then after the last patch it did. But the then the VR toolbar would not work. This morning it does…

Overall, it has been a disappointing experience, far from the pre launch hype and expectation but is steadily improving.

Performance in VR is another bugbear. Sometimes it is ok, sometimes a stutterfest.
DCS, despite often having far more detailed hi def cockpits and loads of weathering offers far far superior performance in VR.

Comparing the DCS heatblur F4 phantom and the relatively simple comanche cockpit , the comanche should hands down be the winner in the fps stakes.

It is not even close.

The “dedicated” VR group at Asobo that I heard about, needs to get their act together.

PC Game Pass is the route for you. You can sign up for 14 days and only pay $1 and normal monthly subscription is $11.99 after that.

The beauty is you can cancel at any time.
