I just bought a 4080 today, after installation I immediately launch the game to see the performance with nothing visual settings changed, it’s so weird that FPS is still around 35, which my old card 5700xt could reach. Then I changed my settings to low-high-ultra, DX12, even DLSS, still below 60fps.
I was too shock to see. I mean even if it was not a 4090, but way too far than I was expected. It’s like I updated my card for nothing and God I spent about 11000RMB, just when I about to accept it, I turn on the Task Manager, I saw the GPU page, GPU usage was about 60%, which it should be 99%, then I curious is it caused by my CPU?
Here are my hardwares:
Intel i5-12600K
Nvidia RTX4080 (Gigabyte)
RAM 16GB*4 3200
WD 1T Hard-drive M.2
Few weeks ago I updated my i7-7700K to 12600K, the fps raised about 20, is the same situation here? Im thinking update to i7-13700K, but I don’t know will my 850W power could handle it.
I had the same sensation when switching from 2070s to 3070ti
When I switched from 9900kf to 13900kf my fps and overall performance increased a lot.
Now as Im mostly gpu bound Im thinking of switching from 3070ti to 4080 for dlss3… You can play this game all over and over again. As the 13th gen cpus are very strong (sorry for bad tech english) you might be able to gain some fps or maybe more. but sometimes chasing fps makes you forget that your current system is enough for your needs (in my case I am on 2 1080p monitors so its a little bit overkill already lol but no harm in having a solid system especially cpu for msfs I guess).
I think the CPU bottlehead is back, just like me switching 7700K to 12600K. Fps increased very lot.
I agree with you about the need. Can’t always chasing for high FPS, it’s endless both for time and money. All I want is 60fps few above or below on 4K Mostly Ultra (40fps is acceptable and playable), but I had spent a lot of money on the card, it will be pointless if I still had the same fps, frankly the 4080 is all I need instead of 4090 ( well actually too expensive ).
So im thinking switching to 13700KF, then my setups are strong enough for me to fly the MSFS for the next few years.
Wait for AMD’s zen 4 3d cache lineup in q1 of 2023. It’s going to be even better than the 13900k. I’m telling you that the reveal of the zen 4 3d cache CPUs are only 3 and a half weeks away at CES 2023. DON’T BUY INTEL!!!
My PC and Graphics card upgrades were driven by FPS since the very first edition of MSFS in the early 80’s. Each new addition taxed the PC / Graphics cards I was using so it was upgrade time!
So far on this current version of MSFS 2020, I haven’t had to upgrade yet. Intel i9 3.6 Ghz, 16.GB ram, Nvidia 2080ti.
I was having some stuttering issues and traced it down to the rolling cache. Got rid of the rolling cache, and the stuttering went away.
In addition, I set the priority of FlightSimulator.exe in the task manager to High.
I am looking to build a new computer with latest gen and it is/has been impossible the last 2 years. I hope it will be better 2023 but if fall 2022 is an indication I am worried.
CPU for AM5, almost impossible to find the best CPU, GFX card no better. Market is flooded with 30xx cards, often with B-level brands and still costs way more than they should. Getting 40xx card is a full time job to find, let alone pay 2500 euros for 4090. I refuse to pay for 4090 cards that are essentially modified 30xx cards.
DLSS 3, no thanks, I can’t read the screens with DLSS on, complete waist.
I guess I will keep waiting for the right moment when 40xx and AM5 is available at the same time, very disappointed with the availability.
I was running a system with 10700k and 3080 and switched to 13700k. Gained approx 15-20fps. Important thing to remember if you consider the upgrade you will need a new motherboard (I got ASUS ROG z690-F) and very likely have to flash the BIOS. Most mobos are not yet directly supporting 13th gen CPUs, but need a BIOS update first. So you need a mobo with in-built BIOS flashback with USB-stick functionality, or you need a 12th gen CPU to set up the system first and flash the BIOS. Also make sure you get the correct RAM, DDR4 bars don’t fit in the DDR5 slots and vice versa.
