Upgraded to 21H2 and latest nvidia drivers, HAG on it was ok, got a bit more fps but that’s mainly due to Nvidia CPL being reset with VR pre-render back to 1 and Vsync off. Smoothness was on par or just slightly worst than previous version of windows and nvidia driver 457.3. BUT it killed performance of all my other games like AC and ACC (race sims).
So all in, not worth turning on HAGs and latest nvidia driver. Went back to 457.3. Reset nvidia CPL to default and got same fps. But decided to set VR pre render to 2 for slightly better smoothness overall.
You should consider trying it on the latest Nvidia drivers with everything at default settings and HAGS left on. That’s the default config and that’s what the devs assume most end users of the G2 will be using since us endless tweakers are definitely in the minority. Most people will plug in the headset and go with it, they’ll never see the Nvidia control panel. You can be sure that the devs testing the G2 and making improvements to the drivers aren’t testing it with old Nvidia drivers. There seems to be a hangup on 457.30 being the “best” driver but it’s not the one the devs will be testing with and at some point, it’s going to pay to be current and up-to-date. For me, that point came as outlined in my original post.
If you give the entire scenario a go, post back with your results. Also let us know your processor specs.
Well I tried with newest driver and HAGS on and sadly, it was definitely worse than before. Much more stutter in photogrammetry area. Will try again with HAGS off. I have an 8700k@4.9 GHz btw
I’ll toss my hat into this ring. Upgraded to H1. I left hags and game mode off. I stuck with 457 and it seemed much worse initially but i feel the sim runs different day to day. With that said my goal was to get the sim working correctly with motion smoothing on. In the end I turned HAGS and Game Mode ON, enabled OXR preview, custom res 70, and motion smoothing always on. Headset at 60hz. TAA to 70. Finally i was able to get a smooth 20fps up to 60hz. clouds high, tlod & olod both 70.
This is over Paro in Bhutan where i am addicted to flying to a320 - I see an easy 15-20 fps drop between say the Cessna 152 and a320 so I do my tweaking using the aircraft i fly the most. I loaded up over Paris before going to bed as i know thats a killer for most people. It seemed to hold up okay. I could see the overlay flashing red occasionally but it that wasn’t on i don’t think i would have noticed.
I know this is far from helpful but I figured i’d put it out there. @LucioTheBird I may try the newest driver tonight and see what changes.
So I’ve finished with my (subjective) testing of 457.30 vs 461.92 on 21H1 and would say that the newer one is a viable alternative, although slightly worse IMO. Sticking with the older one for now, but at least it won’t be a disaster once I’m forced to move up. 461.72 was extremely stuttery for me.
Overall, moving to 21H1 didn’t really improve performance at all for me - but I think my performance was already over average before, think I lucked out somehow in that regard.
What we need is Asobo optimizations and a new generation of hardware!!
I think perhaps some of the improvements came from the WMR update - I see they announced this recently, so we finally have some patch notes… but I already seem to have had it installed from the windows beta channel. It’s now available to all.
10.0.19041.2041
Compatible with Windows 10, version 1903, and newer.
Update the winding order of the hidden area mesh for the HP Reverb G2 to be consistent with other headsets.
Visuals quality improvements for the HP Reverb G2 headsets.
Windows Mixed Reality headset platform and reliability improvements.
dumb question, where can i find the version number of WMR? i just find version numbers of mixed reality portal and openxr developer tools, but these are complete different numbers
This is the Hololens driver number - Open device manager, drop down “mixed reality devices” and right click “HP reverb Virtual reality Headset G2”… go to driver tab and if you to date you should see driver version 10.0.19041.2041
Happy would be overstating things, I’m not happy with 30fps but that’s more a MSFS thing than an Nvidia thing.
It is for the most part pretty smooth and less stutters than anything else post 457.30… I can run 100% OXR, 100% in game and get a reasonably reliable 30fps. I wouldn’t say it’s a particular improvement over 457.30 personally.
