Sim keeps on cutting out

I have not used FS2020 for a couple of weeks but when I tried it this morning after a session in PC mode for about half an hour I tried VR with a Quest 2 headset. Ever since then the sim cuts out at random in both PC and VR mode. When reloaded the error message comes up that an unexpected shut down occurred. Any help and advice welcome.

Try this, and let us know if it helps:

Sign out of the xbox app on your PC, and shut down Xbox app.
Sign out of MS Store App, and shut down same.
Shut down computer.
Unplug all controllers, except mouse and keyboard.
Restart computer.
Open and sign into Xbox app.
Open and sign into MSStore.
Reboot computer again.
Try sim.
Plug in controllers.

Thanks for that but it will be tomorrow before I can try it as the computer is currently in use for other purposes.

Tried all that. It works with PC mode but crashes as soon as I go to VR mode.

Not sure what is happening here but all of a sudden the sim has decided to behave itself and is working fine again. The VR is still in reset mode so I will try tweaking it gradually over the next few days or so to improve the visuals.

Unfortunately, the problem has returned. Every time that I try to switch to VR the sim just crashes sometimes taking the whole computer with it sometimes just going to a black screen so that I have to switch the computer off and on again. The drivers ( AMD Radeon ) are up to date and it worked perfectly earlier today. I am now wondering if it is worth my while deleting and then reloading the sim. At the moment most of it is on the hard drive with some parts on an SSD that I installed when the hard drive was not up to the job. Whilst reloading is a pain I cannot think of anything else, especially as I would be able to load it all onto the SSD this time round. I have the disc version by the way.

When you installed the sim, have you installed all the updates from the net?

The sim has been installed for over a year now and all mandatory updates that have been brought out have been loaded as and when they are issued. I am not aware of any other updates but I will check to be certain.

You probably do have them in that case.
It may indeed help to reinstall.
If you are going to go that route, ensure all the residual folders left over after the uninstall are deleted as well.

Thanks for the replies. It is going to be a pain reloading it as it is almost a days` work switching the discs and waiting for each one to load. But as I say I cannot think of any other way. It might be interesting though to see if downloading it all onto the SSD makes a difference.

You may also be interested in this, it may save some effort.

Thanks but I think that deleting it in its entirety and then reloading it from scratch is the most certain way if the one needing the most effort.

Has anything changed with the drivers/software for the VR device?

Not that I am aware of. But I will certainly check it out.

The VR device ( Oculus quest 2 ) is fully up to date and works fine with Google Earth in VR using air link as opposed to a cable. The sim quits at random times before switching to VR as well as when switching. It will either lock up on one screen, switch itself off or go to a black screen. So I think it is definitely a complete deletion and reload to see if that solves the issue. I just need to work up the willpower to do it. If that does not work the only other thing that I can think of is a problem with the Radeon graphics card.

I’d suggest you try a couple of other games on both VR and normal to see if they have the same crashing issue before you reinstall MSFS if you can’t stomach that process. That might let you know if its the Radeon causing issues.

When I have reinstalled I’ve left it chugging away overnight.

Unfortunately I do not have any games. I am not a computer gamer and I am only interested in flight sims. I have had problems with the graphics card in the past but luckily the firm I bought it from ( PC Specialist UK ) have sorted it over the phone. If it is the graphics card it should not be a problem getting it sorted or replaced as it is still under warranty. Meanwhile of course I am without the sim, an irritant but not a life threatening problem.

So far today has been a miserable failure. I removed the sim and then tried to reload it. All went well until the final part where it asked for the activation code. Whenever I entered it I just got the message that the code had already been used. On to Microsoft help at a cost of £5. Their technician managed to get a download started from Xbox after about fifty minutes of messing remotely with my computer. Unfortunately, I thought “great” and signed off the helpline while the game loaded. It has got as far as the update screen and has stuck at the very beginning. I now cannot get a reply from the technician I was in contact with earlier to get it sorted. I have tried deleting it and reinstalling it myself from Xbox. But same result. I am now quite certain that the sim is at fault and not my graphics card as Google earth works perfectly both in PC and VR modes. I can only think that my next step will be to bite the bullet buy a new sim on disc with a valid activation code.

Here is a procedure that will guide you through all the issues I have seen posted here.
It may be of help.

Ensure all addons are removed from the Community folder, and any 3rd party plug-ins such as Navigraph etc., are uninstalled.
Remove any overclocks you have set up.
If you have used the Google map replacement, uninstall it using it’s uninstaller.
Ensure any third party antivirus programs (Avast, AVG, etc) are shut down.
Ensure you have an open path through the Window’s firewall.
Ensure all Windows updates are installed.
Make sure the time and zone in your PC settings are correct.
Sign out of the xbox app on your PC, and shut down Xbox app.
Sign out of MS Store App, and shut down same.
Shut down computer.
Unplug all controllers, except mouse and keyboard.
Restart computer.
Open and sign into and install any updates to MSStore.
Open and sign into Xbox app.
Reboot computer again.
Try sim.
Plug in controllers.

let us know if this helps!

Thanks, I will give that a try tomorrow as I have had enough for today. Sorry forgot to mention I deleted the sim download that the technician did as it obviously would not work. I will try again to download it using my discs.
